WAYNE KENNEDY
Although the term is progressing rapidly, it is definitely progressing with an undeniable
sense of purpose, growth and development that is being felt throughout the College.

PBC Sports Academy
On the 1st March, the Leadership Team met with all Sporting Academy coaching staff. The term ‘Kaizen’ (a Japanese term which translates to ‘continuous improvement’) was the focus of the meetings discussions.
Our Sporting Academy programs have achieved outstanding results within their inaugural year of operations. All in attendance were encouraged to clearly communicate any inherent inefficiencies or issues – with the goal to modify or improve to ensure the various sporting codes within the PBC Sports Academy continue to go from strength to strength.
The sports science components of the Sporting Academy is a distinguishing feature that all coaching staff are confident will provide additional longevity for our young athletes within their chosen sports.
A considerable number of the pertinent College policies were discussed in depth throughout the meeting to create enhanced collaboration and uniformity amongst the Sporting Academy’s sporting codes and the College.
NAPLAN
On 3 rd March, I attended the NAPLAN Online 2021 National Protocols training webinar conducted by Queensland Curriculum & Assessment Authority (QCAA).
The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) assesses student literacy and numeracy skills.
Students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 participate in the annual NAPLAN tests in reading, writing, conventions of language (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and numeracy.
The actual NAPLAN Online assessment window starts on Tuesday 11th May and finishes on Friday 21st May 2021. I will be forwarding a range of NAPLAN information in coming Emu Chronicle editions.
The reason for mentioning NAPLAN at this point is that the College (Year 9 students only – Omnibus test) will be participating in the Coordinated Practice Test scheduled for 10:30am on Thursday 25th March 2021.
Invitation to All Parents
In the last Emu Chronicle I conveyed how pleased I have been with the open communication being generated by students and parents through the Leadership Team channels and how I continue to encourage families that have made appointments to convey with me any personal concerns.
In the past weeks, many productive meetings have been undertaken, which I believe have resulted in continuous improvement being implemented.
The Leadership team would like to extend an invitation to all parents of our College community to attend our first Peregian Beach College Parent Information & Project Support (PIPS) Fundraising Committee for 2021 on Monday 15th March 2021 at 3:30pm in the Kelly Library.
The PIPS committee is the equivalent to a Parent & Friends Committee – only better!

There has been a delay in receiving the hard copy catalogues for Issue 2, however parents can still view the catalogue online.

SCHOOL PHOTOS 2021
Photo day is Friday 12 March!
Just Photography has a new online ordering system which means that families no longer have to pre purchase school photos. Hence, there is no need to return any forms or payment to school before photo day.
On photo day, all students will receive a flyer with the details on how to order and purchase photos.
Sibling photos will be taken between 7:45 – 8:15 on Friday 12 March. There is no need to pre-register. Just send your children into school next Friday between these times to have their photo taken.

Prep
AMBER GARRATT
Exploring Wind Testers & Maths
In Prep we have been learning all about the weather.
We created “Wind Testers’ so we could check if the wind was light or strong. We enjoyed making predictions about which objects/materials we thought would move.
The Prep Explorers have been learning about measurement in maths.
We worked together to put ourselves in order from the shortest to the tallest. It would be interesting to see if the order changes by the end of the year!
Year 2

Year 2 Excursion to Dragan Farms
In Design Technology, the Year 2s are learning how plants and animals are grown for food
and the technology that is used on farms.
In addition, we have explored the concept of sustainability.
We are very lucky to have a small farm on our doorstep and neighbours who welcome our visits and enable us to provide great hands-on learning opportunities for our students. Alexi and Mark from Dragan Farms explained the portable Chicken Caravan system, which safely houses their free-range chickens, enables the easy collection of eggs and fertilizes their various pastures at the same time. Best of all everyone got to cuddle a chicken!
If you are after free range eggs produced by healthy, happy chickens you can purchase them at Dragan Farms.
Year 4
RACHEL PRESTON
Ready to explore in Year 4!
In History this term, Year 4 are investigating the voyages undertaken by various explorers up to the early 1800s. Our journey began way back in 1405 with the Chinese explorer Zheng He. We discovered that his ‘Chinese treasure ship’ was over 120 metres long, had 9 masts, 4 decks and travelled in a fleet of over 317 ships with 28000 crew members!
Zheng He undertook 7 voyages in total and some say he visited Australia although we found it difficult to find any evidence to prove this; maybe he did beat Captain Cook to it!?
Year 4 made some of their very own Chinese treasure ships which are just fantastic!
Year 5
HEATH CAHALAN
5C English Term 1
Using their graphic design skills acquired in Digital Technology, students were asked to create a poster on the five features of fantasy.
The posters could showcase one or all five of the following features:
- impossible settings,
- quests,
- portals,
- supernatural characters and
- magic
Roman made a magnificent poster, connecting Magic and Star Wars together. His poster is very eye catching, “I tried to match the colours of the letters with the background”.
Jacob went all out, highlighting all five features of fantasy. “The movies are some of my favourite of all time as well”.
Cameron created a brilliant (but also scary) fantasy poster. “Terminator lives in the real world, but he has supernatural powers”. Great example of a Supernatural Character Cameron.
Year 9/10 Robotic Space Challenge
SUZANNE ARMSTRONG
This term, Year 9/10 Digital Technologies students have been working on robotics.
They have been completing challenges on our Space Challenge mat which has involved collecting rock samples, activating a satellite dish and rescuing another robot stuck on the surface of Mars.
As is always expected in robotics, there have been technical difficulties and many frustrating moments, but students have been learning persistence and problem-solving skills along the way.
Vaccinations
Ozcare will be administering vaccinations to students in Years 7 and 10 on the following dates. Only students with signed consent forms will be vaccinated.
