Principal’s Report

WAYNE KENNEDY

There has been considerable positive energy flowing throughout the College, and this has not only come from the additional solar installations

that took place within the Kelly Library earlier this week. The positive energy has been generated by the very successful musical production of Disney’s Beauty and the Beast Junior; a well-attended information evening for students transitioning to our Middle School and for those Year 9 families selecting their electives subjects for 2022; a victory at the Australasian Champion of Champion Futsal tournament by the Under 12 and Under 15 players, plus the relief and jubilation expressed by our Year 12 students as they exited their final ever Secondary School examination.

Musical

The College’s musical production of Disney’s Beauty and the Beast Junior achieved the objectives of being highly entertaining, whilst enabling students with musical and drama talents to showcase their skills, at the same time providing opportunity for all students to have performance and stage experience within a supportive environment. I would like to acknowledge the diligence of Mrs Samantha Ryan (Music Coordinator) and Mrs Haylee Freudigmann, as well as the impassioned main cast, for the many hours of preparation to ensure we were all well entertained and presented with a quality school musical production.

Information Sessions

I would like to thank all parents that attended the Middle School Information session and Year 9 & 10 Subject Selection evening. Both events presented parents and students with considerable information to ensure that the transitions into the 2022 academic year is smooth and has a clearly navigable pathway. Please feel free to contact Mr Shane Dupuy (Years 5-8), Mr Gary Freudigmann (Years 9-12) or I, if you have any additional questions concerning the College’s Middle and Senior School.

Futsal Under 12 and Under 14 Champions

On the 5th, 6th & 7th of November the Under 12, Under 13 and Under 14 players in the PBC Sporting Academy program represented Peregian Beach College at the Australasian Champion of Champion Futsal tournament: with both the Under 12 and Under 14 teams winning the competition. Mr Wilkes (Technical/Sporting Director) and Mr Freudigmann (Sports Coordination) have conveyed that a high standard of sporting professionalism was displayed by the Sporting Academy students throughout the three-day competition. The College is extremely pleased with the results, especially coming in such close succession to the victory within The South-East Queensland Senior Primary School Championship.

Year 12’s

On Thursday 11th November, I was pleased to supervise the am and pm Psychology examination papers; the last external QCAA assessment for our Year 12 students. At the conclusion of the examination the students were all at different phases of processing their own personal milestones. However, the jubilation of completing your Year 12 studies in a time governed by Health Department directives and social uncertainty presented its own reward. The Senior Secondary Teaching Team have been very proud of the students’ application, preparation, and achievement throughout the Year. The 2021 Graduation dinner will take place at 6pm on Wednesday 17th November at Coolum Surf Club – Private Dining Room. The Year 12 Graduation Assembly will take place within the Kelly library on Friday 19th November at 9am. The Graduation Assembly will be attended by Secondary students (Year 5-12) and Year 12 families.

2022 Teaching Allocations

Within the next Emu Chronicle, I would like to provide clarity on staffing and class allocations for 2022. I have received a number of warm emails from parents requesting their son or daughter’s current teacher be allocated to teach the year above in 2022. I have received a two-page hand-written request from a Year 1 student not wanting to leave Mrs Adler and a ten slide PowerPoint from a Year 6 student requesting Miss Davis.  I must say the English department gets an ‘A’ for persuasive writing instruction.

Book Fair

Hello PBC Families

The recent Book Fair generated many new editions to our library however there can never be too many books in a school library, especially in a school that is growing as rapidly as ours.

If you have any non-fiction books that are in good condition and are no longer needed at home, we will welcome them.  We are always searching for books on continents, sea life and sea animals, puppies and ponies, sport (especially football) to name just a few.

Please drop them in to the office and I will ensure they are covered and cared for, and most of all, read.

Thank you all in advance!

Yours in reading,

Miss Tania

Musical – Beauty and the Beast

It was the year I thought it might not happen…but despite lockdowns, a home learning period, a postponement, and the always unknown outcome of the dreaded COVID, we got there in the end! And what a spectacular show our Prep to Year 8’s put on!!!

Our students rehearsed for over seven months during lunchtimes, ELO’s and even holidays to prepare this production and I hope every one of them is as proud as I am of their performances! It could be clearly seen how everyone enjoyed our wonderful production which concluded to thunderous applause from the audience.

A huge thank you again to everyone for all your help, the show wouldn’t have gone ahead without you, and thank you to everyone that bought tickets and bounty boxes for your continued support towards our College.

Now to look towards 2023….

Year 11

SARAH BELL

This week year 11 Business and Legal Studies students are busy revising for their final year 11 exams next week.  The students are given the syllabus descriptors and chose to lead the revision themselves, working as a team to identify knowledge gaps and then sharing their knowledge to fill in those gaps.

This process has worked well for them all year, yielding positive exam results, and has created a wonderful camaraderie amongst the cohort. In this unit, the Legal Eagles have examined the governance system in Australia, including the passage of bills into legislation, the function and structure of the Australian Constitution, the referendum process, and the purpose of the High Court of Australia. Students have critically analysed and evaluated the factors that contribute to responsible and representative government, the flaws in the referendum process, the way in which the Constitution upholds democratic ideals, the legal ramifications of landmark cases, such as Mabo and the Tasmanian Dams case, and the Rule of Law.  It’s so pleasing to see students shaping their own learning process, and working collaboratively to ensure mutual success in the subject.

Year 12 – Friends

SARAH BELL

Recently, the Year 12 cohort and I had a fun afternoon filming their graduation video. There were many laughs and lots of fun as they flung themselves over furniture, hung out in the junior playground, danced and hugged the college emu statue. It was great to see this cohort take time out of their busy revision schedule to have a bit of fun and just be together.  We will play this clip at their graduation ceremony in Week 7, when we farewell our Year 12 cohort, and wish them all the very best for the next chapter in their very exciting journey.

Apples, Apples, Apples!

In the Prep Explorers we have been using our senses to make our writing more interesting. We loved researching them by having a munch in class! Look how clever we are!

Year 5

HEATH CAHALAN

USC Student – Maths Lesson

Over the last two weeks, we have had the privilege of hosting a University of Sunshine Coast Pre-Service Teacher named Ms Rachel.

In this lesson, Ms Rachel taught 5C how to investigate the nets of 3D shapes by creating a series of islands. This cross curricular activity also required skills and knowledge from Geography as well as Art. Friday, Week 6 is Ms Rachel’s last day, on behalf of 5C, thank you for being part of the PBC family and we wish you all the best in your future studies!

Super Scientists

In Science we have been learning about different materials and their properties. This week we investigated what materials are waterproof by testing them and recording our results. This activity used lots of our skills and encouraged us to work together as a team.

The Day the Chairs Quit

There was confusion in Year 1 and 2N last week as the classroom chairs went on strike! Both classes were shocked to come into their classrooms to find nowhere to sit and all the chairs piled up in the corner with signs saying, ‘WE QUIT!’. The chairs were simply fed up with the way they had been treated.

The children were excited to find they had a letter to read from the chairs. The chairs explained they didn’t like being stood on, dragged across the classroom, not tucked in or swung on.

The children had to sit on the floor or kneel instead of chairs for the day. They soon realised how important the chairs were to them and thought of clever ideas to entice them to return to their usual role. Some wonderful persuasive letters were written and the children are being extremely mindful of how they treat all the other equipment in the classroom now!

This activity was inspired by the book ‘The Day the Crayons Quit’ by Drew Daywalt, in which the crayons in the story write letters to their owner Duncan explaining why they have gone on strike.

ELO’s

RACHEL PRESTON & THE HANDICRAFTERS

Handicraft – Stick Family

In Handicraft ELO this week, students demonstrated their awesome imaginations by constructing some fantastic stick families! Students used their fine motor skills to weave and join the sticks together to make the most wonderful creations – can you spot any family resemblances?!
