Principal’s Report

WAYNE KENNEDY

Dear Parents and Caregivers,

As a principal there are always several emails that you are greeted with in the mornings.  As you can imagine, some are more appealing than others. I received the following email this morning from a Year 3 student and it had me smiling from the start.

“Hi Mrs Kennedy, it’s M. from 3D.  Me and my friend L. would love to do a fundraiser for kid’s hospitals. Me and my Nan can make cupcakes and cookies for the fundraiser. If we can do a fundraiser, please try to tell me when the dates are. We want to try to do a week if we can. Kind regards, M.”

I also received this email:

“Just a quick email to say how wonderful I think Ms Preston is, she has been able to manage all my daughter’s needs, this has made a huge difference. Ms Preston’s teaching style suits my daughter, it’s perfect! “

In a world that is often filled with the media’s negative news and conversations of things costing twice as much these days (and taking twice as long to deliver) it is so refreshing to have received such emails. It is also a highlight to have discussions with students that are full of positivity, anticipation, and energy on such topics as: what costumes my friends and I are wearing to Book Week, who is in my camp group and what cool activities we are doing on day two (Year 5-8 Kenilworth Homestead camp 16th – 19th August), how many fish I caught during Movement and administration telling me what we have an awesome team we have.  Not to mention a conversation I had with an enthusiastic prospective basketball (Sporting Academy) student who attended an information evening, where that student discovered that the program offers 16 hours of training with a well-respected professional coach (Jorden Page), and access to a Professor of Sports Science and a Students Services Team, which supports physical and psychological student athlete wellbeing.  Peregian Beach College is a great place to be!

Basketball

On the evening of the 11th of August, the College held our second Sunshine Coast Sporting Academy/PBC Basketball Academy ‘Roll-Out’ session. The ‘Roll-Out’ session was well attended, with word travelling fast within the basketball community of this unique opportunity being proposed for the commencement of the 2023 academic year.  Melvyn Wilkes (Sporting Director for Sunshine Coast Sporting Academy) and Gary Freudigmann (Senior School Coordinator) again provided prospective Sporting Academy basketball students with a clear timeframe and plan regarding programmed trial sessions.  The initial trial days will take place this term on Monday the 22nd & 29th of August, and Monday 5th September at the Sunshine Coast University. (Additional trial days may also take place in Term 4, with dates to be confirmed in forthcoming editions of this newsletter).  Trial days will comprise of sports science testing and data collection, academic classes, and practical training. For further information please contact Sunshine Coast Sporting Academy Director Melvyn Wilkes:  sport@pbc.qld.edu.au

District Sport

Whilst writing I have just been presented with the North District Secondary Schools Annual Athletics Carnival Per Capita Trophy. This trophy signifies that from the students that represented PBC, we were the best Secondary athletics School in the Northern Districts. Congratulations to Kyan Bryant who was awarded the 17 Years & Over Boys North Districts Athletics Champion for 2022.

College Growth

This week the administration team submitted the annual Non-State Schools Accreditation Boards Census. It is extremely pleasing to report that the College had an additional 50+ students when comparison was made to last year’s data. Although additional growth provides enhanced funding to support teaching resources and College infrastructure, the Leadership Team are working hard to ensure that the individual academic needs of our students remain the College’s priority, as does conducive class sizes.

Futsal

Throughout Week 3, our Sporting Academy football students competed in the Southern QLD Champion of Champions Futsal Competition at the Nissan Arena.  The College had achieved outstanding results within this competition in 2021 and we were hopeful to also experience success this year.  I am extremely pleased to convey that our girls team finished in the top four, the Under 9’s, 11’s and 14’s all made the finals, and the Under 10’s, Under 12’s, Under 13’s and Under 15’s all won their respective finals. I am extremely proud, not only of the high standard of result achieved, but also the sportsmanship displayed by all students that represented PBC.  I wish all our futsal teams every success in the upcoming National titles taking place at Coomera on the 9-11th September 2022.

Netball

The College has also commenced the marketing for our forthcoming Netball Academy (also with a proposed commencement in Term 1 2023), with Expression of Interest posted on social media platforms. The proposed Netball Academy will be a progressive program to develop students from Year 3 to Year 12.  The program will comprise a comprehensive Sports Science program, as well as individual and team training programs, with an anticipated 16 hours of training each week, carefully integrated into our education program. The first Netball Academy information evening with take place within the Kelly library at 6pm on Monday 22nd August 2022.

Japan Day

I am very pleased to convey that the College will be having a Japan Day on the 6th September 2022. All Prep – Year 6 students will experience a Taiko Drum Performance and our Year 5 and 6 students will participate in Taiko Drum workshops throughout the day.  I believe sushi is also available for students.  The implementation of Japanese language studies within the College’s academic program is producing very pleasing results, with Samantha Williams doing an outstanding job in establishing the program and making plans with Japanese schools for shared education opportunities.

Open Day

Please share with friends that the College will be conducting an Open Day on Tuesday 30th August.

Junior School

The Junior school is keen to hear from anyone in the school community who works with carpeting and would be able to donate carpet sample squares for our younger students to sit on when on the concrete verandas.

Sporting Achievements

QUEENSLAND SELECTION ALERT

Congratulations to full-time academy students Ania M. & Jett F. on their selection into the QLD under 12 football team.

Ania had a great tournament, playing a pivotal role in her sides 4th place finish. Jett, along with 4 other PBC academy students, played a great brand of team football. The boys side only lost one game throughout the tournament, meaning Sunshine Coast finished on top for the first time since 2003.

Fishing Report

SHAE, SAVANNAH DAVIS & MISS BROOKE

Our Movement Fishing group have had a productive two weeks of angling.  Last week we landed and released 4 fish (all Bream), and this week we had 6 students successfully land fish – one of which caught three!!!!  It was such an eventful afternoon we got to the point where we were wondering if we had landed 6 or 7 fish, turns out that it was 8!

We were joined by the South East Queensland Daiwa Representative – Shannon Watson, who provided lure blanks for the students to create their own custom lures!
