Principal’s Report
SHANE DUPUY
Welcome back, families. It was great to see so many smiling faces on students and staff as they returned from well-deserved holidays Tuesday morning. In particular, may I welcome back Mr. Wayne Kennedy and Ms. Tania Robinson, who returned from their long overdue overseas holiday. A special thank you to Miss Brooke who did an amazing job of covering for Miss Tania in the library, and to Mrs. Hagemann, who took over Mr. Kennedy’s classes. Your enthusiasm and positive student centric attention was appreciated.
As with every other term, I expect it will be one of engaging learning opportunities and fun-filled events as students navigate the last weeks of the academic year. We have much to look forward to with senior external exams taking place from week 4, our services group are planning some worthy fundraising events and trips to aged care facilities, we have awards ceremonies and to round out the year, our water based fun days. I highly recommend families keep an eye on the College Facebook page and emails to ensure they keep up to date with events.

Term 3 saw the departure of Mrs. Sarah Bell, who had been with the College for 5 years. Being a successful business owner for many years, Sarah brought a wealth of knowledge and real-world experience to the classroom to support her students. Her diligence and hard work are very much appreciated and we wish her every success as she moves on to the next phase of her professional journey. In her place, we welcome Mrs. Kelly Brodrick. An experienced teacher and administrator, Mrs. Brodrick’s skills lie in the areas of Senior English, Enrichment and VET. I am delighted to welcome Kelly to the College and am certain the students will benefit from her approachable nature and expertise.
Construction under way
Upon return, families will have noticed the temporary fencing installed along the oval road in preparation for our new sports stadium build. During the holidays, trenches were dug, and steel supports placed in readiness for concrete to be poured. This week, approximately 120m3 were used to complete the first quarter of the footings. In the coming weeks, the same amount of work will be required before the slab is complete. With a footprint of just under half an acre, the stadium will be a fantastic addition to the College’s infrastructure allowing for a huge range of College and community activities. During the building phase, we ask that all families in close proximity of the build site and oval, adhere to the strict instructions of authorised personnel to ensure their safety.

Welcome to our final term of the year! No doubt, the term will fly past in no time. Below, I have outlined a few reminders for what’s coming up and a couple of points regarding our uniform requirements.
Events this term:
Assemblies – Weeks 3, 5, 7 and 9 (final formal Celebration of Learning assembly, Week 10 – 6th December at 9.00am)
Learn to Swim – a letter sent was home last week regarding the learn to swim program. Please ensure that if you have any questions regarding this program, you direct them to your class teacher, or Alec Wareing, prior to commencement.
Pre-Prep Taster – All families were sent an information letter last week, regarding our taster which will take place on Monday, Week 4.
End of Term Prep Transition – Prep transition day will take place on Monday the 4th of Dec, Week 10
End of Year fun Day events – Our P-2, and 3-4, fun day will take place in Week 10. More information regarding these events, to follow.
Reports – Term 4 is a reporting term. Please ensure that your child has a nutritious breakfast each morning, and plenty of sleep. Many classes are currently undertaking final assessments, and our expectation is that students will continue working solidly in all subjects areas, through to the end of the term.
Uniforms – please remember that even though it is Term 4, and we are nearing the end of the year, we continue to have high expectations that students will arrive in the correct uniform, as per our uniform policy. If for some reason, your child is unable to wear the correct uniform on a given day, it is expected that you will provide written notification regarding this situation (email is fine), to inform their classroom teacher. Without this written notification, detention’s will be issued. All uniform infringements are recorded on your child’s digital school file. If there is confusion around this, please make contact with either your class teacher, or myself.

Nurturing Leadership
As our Year 12 students ready themselves for their final exams and fond farewells it is with much excitement and enthusiasm that we look toward our Year 11 cohort to take the reins as student leaders here at PBC.
Student leadership plays an invaluable role in shaping the ethos of our school. Here at PBC, we believe that cultivating leadership skills in our students is not just an option but a responsibility we wholeheartedly embrace.
Student leadership is not merely about holding titles or positions; it is about fostering qualities such as responsibility, initiative, and empathy. Our commitment to nurturing these attributes is grounded in the belief that every student has the potential to become a leader in their own right. By providing them with opportunities to lead, we empower them to realize and harness their capabilities.
Student leaders play a pivotal role in shaping the culture of our school. Their enthusiasm, positive attitude, and commitment inspire their peers to strive for excellence, one of our core values, and contribute to a supportive learning environment. By fostering a culture of inclusivity and collaboration, our student leaders contribute significantly to the overall well-being of our school community.
We recognise the diversity of talents and interests within our student body and aim to provide a range of leadership opportunities that cater to different strengths. I encourage all students to voice their opinions and contribute to decision-making processes, to ensure that their unique perspectives shape the trajectory of our school.
Over the coming weeks we will hear from our year 11 students who would like to take on the role of student leader let us celebrate the potential within each of them. By fostering a culture of leadership, we are not only preparing students for future success but also contributing to the creation of responsible, compassionate, and forward-thinking individuals.

In this week’s assembly, students were presented with a challenge to embody excellence, the fourth core value at PBC. The mantra “Hard work beats talent when talent doesn’t work hard” encapsulated the central message for our students. I wholeheartedly encourage each member of our student body to embrace and strive for excellence in all aspects of their academic and personal pursuits.

Beating School Exam Stress
A regular topic of conversation with students is coping with exam stress. This is particularly important for our current Year 12 students as they prepare for their external exams.
Stress around exam time can impact a young person’s general wellbeing and can affect both their mental and physical health. Having a stressed-out teenager can impact the whole family. To help young people and their families deal with stress in the lead up to exams ReachOut has produced the following tips.

Firstly, may I extend my sincere thanks to Miss Brooke who ran the library during my absence last term. Miss Brooke enjoyed the experience as much as our students enjoyed having her smiling face and helpful manner amongst the books.
Schoolastic Book Club – Issue 7 is currently out. Years Prep to Year 6 have been given the magazine. Closing date is 20 October. There are many good buys in the issue.

Damon from Year 6 has been reading Hero’s of Olympus The Lost Hero by Rick Riordan. Here is what Damon had to say:
“It’s fascinating and has a good perspective. I would recommend this book due to its creativeness and because it’s a movie. It evolves around the Greek gods.”
Annual Book Fair
My extremely whopping news is that our Annual Book Fair is coming to the college in Week 4.
Opening dates and times: Monday 23-26 October: 8.00am – 3.30pm.
Our aim is to sell more books than our 318 total in 2022. I am positive this can be achieved with your support. Not only is the fair a wonderful way to celebrate reading, but it is also a way for our college to earn valuable resources. For every $1000 we are rewarded with $250 Scholastic Rewards to purchase Scholastic books.
And lastly, thank you to those families and staff who have donated books to our library. I appreciate every donated book and take joy in placing these on our library bookshelves.

Hospitality Studies

This year, our Year 10 hospitality students are producing and welcoming you to purchase some delicious high tea boxes that are filled with sweet and savoury items. These high tea boxes will include PBC inspired frosted cupcakes, homemade lemon curd tartlets, a variety of freshly made sandwiches, and spinach feta pastries.
It’s important to note that the items are not gluten free or dairy free, however they are vegetarian.
To order these boxes please use the Try Booking link, the cost is $8.50 and is suitable for 1 person. These boxes will be produced on Friday 3rd of November (Week 5), ready for morning tea. They will be able to be collected from the Food Tech Kitchen.

Year 10 Hospitality Students
Year 10 Work Experience
During the final week of Term 3 (Week 9), our Year 10 students travelled to different worksites (including some in Brisbane, across Queensland and even interstate), to participate in our Peregian Beach College Work Experience Program.
The Work Experience Program is a short-term placement (a week), whereby students observe different aspects of work within their chosen industry and assist with tasks allocated by their supervisor.
Prior to commencing their work experience, students were given guidance on how to contact prospective worksites to see whether they could commence their work experience placement there. Due to the busy nature of some organisations, some students were given their first choice whilst others had to continue to persevere and find another worksite. This task alone, taught students about how to best deal with rejection, as well as continuing to build their resilience.
During their work experience placement, most students were visited by members of the Peregian Beach College teaching team. The teachers asked students how they were liking their work experience, what activities they had to perform, whether this may lead to future employment etc. Supervisors had also been given the opportunity to discuss the performance of their student(s), with many commenting on what an asset their student was to their worksite.
Upon coming back to school at the beginning of Term 4, the Year 10 students gave me insight into their work experience placement, with some cementing future employment opportunities as a direct result of this program.
I want to use this opportunity to thank the worksites and supervisors for volunteering to host their student(s) during this busy period. I would also like to thank my fellow colleagues for taking time out of their busy schedules to visit our Year 10 students at their chosen places of work.

Elijah O– Solomon Islands’ FIBA National Squad Selection
In a first for PBC, our very own Elijah O. has gained men’s National team selection! Congratulations to Elijah O. for his selection in the Solomon Islands Men’s FIBA National squad. After completing a rigorous 7-day training camp in the Solomon Island’s over the holidays, Elijah is gearing up to compete at the Pacific Games, commencing on November 17th in the Solomon Islands. We are excited to see him shine on the international stage. Best of luck Elijah!
Gisele S – Australian Junior Surf Titles
Congratulations to Gisele S. who will represent Peregian Beach College at the Australian Junior Surf Titles in November. Gisele will travel to Phillip Island Victoria, where amongst other amazing up and coming youth surfers she will compete. By participating in this event, Gisele has the opportunity to progress through to the World Junior Surf Championship
Blake K. – Under 16 National Football Titles
We applaud Blake Koitka for his outstanding performance representing Queensland at the Under 16 National Football Titles. As the goalkeeper, Blake’s skill and determination shone brightly as he allowed the least number of goals, proving to be a brick wall at the back. Congratulations Blake!
Zye T – State Rock Climbing Titles
Zye T. showcased his rock climbing prowess by competing in the State Rock Climbing Titles held in Logan. Placing 19th in a highly competitive field is an impressive achievement. PBC can’t wait to see you keep ‘climbing’ up the rankings.

A special round of applause to Abel, Jett, Hudson, Amira, Claudia, and Gypsy for their selection in the Under 14’s Sunshine Coast School Futsal Team. Their dedication and hard work have earned them a well-deserved spot on the team, and we have no doubt they will represent us admirably.

The Sunshine Coast Fire Basketball team finished both days at the recent Champion Basketball Schools of Queensland (CBSQ) on a very high note.

Netball
The netball academy players were invited by Integrated Rehab Centre (IRC) on Thursday 14 September for a special afternoon of general sport therapy.
The goal was for our academy athletes to experience different methods to aid in their recovery from training load both mentally and physically.
The athletes were introduced to traditional concepts such as physiotherapy and exercise physiology as well as new concepts such as hot/cold contract therapy, compression and percussive therapy.
A big thank you to coach Nat and Freya Simmonds for making this possible.
Year 1
Fire Education
In the last week of Term 3, the Year 1 students participated in the Year 1 Fire Education program provided by the Queensland Fire and Emergency Services. Supporting our Term 3 Health unit: Playing It Safe, the students explored the various fire safety and life saving techniques. The students had a wonderful time investigating the fire truck and were particularly impressed when they were each invited to use the hose! Thank you to Coolum Fire Station for such an engaging and exciting visit.
Year 3
Emu Mountain Excursion!
In Geography (HASS) this term, students have been learning about the natural and built features of a place. On Wednesday, both Year 3 classes went on an excursion to Emu Mountain, a significant place of the Sunshine Coast and just down the road from us here at PBC. Students had plenty of water and a healthy snack while on their journey. Halfway up the mountain they sketched what they saw and listed the natural and built features surrounding Emu Mountain.

Science: What’s the matter?
In week 1, students were introduced to chemical sciences and learnt that there are three states of matter: solid, liquid and gas. Students investigated the material ‘custard powder’ and why it is hard to classify as a solid or liquid. Custard powder is a solid and water is a liquid. Students made predictions on what they think will happen when the two are mixed together.
In week 2, students identified that liquids have ‘viscosity’. An experiment was conducted where students perform a ‘runny race’ with different liquids. Students made predictions on which liquid reaches the bottom of the tray first.
