Principal’s Report
WAYNE KENNEDY
With the increasing growth of the College
and following the success of the Year 6 and 8 cohorts split at the commencement of the 2021 academic year, Semester 2 will see the splitting of the Year 2 and Year 7 cohorts.
Mr Dupuy (Middle School Coordinator) and Mr Wareing (Year 7 Homeroom) in conjunction with the Middle School teaching team have discussed the academic, social and individual student needs (supported by Ms Carpenter – Learning support) to establish two separate Year 7 classrooms.
This Issue
Mr Wareing will remain one of the Year 7 Homeroom teachers and new staff member Samantha Mann will undertake additional Year 7 Homeroom duties.
Mrs duToit and Ms Carpenter have used their knowledge of student dynamics and academic abilities to produce the most favourable outcomes for the Year 2 split. Mrs Nealand who has been the Year 2 ‘Friday teacher’ (Term 2) will be appointed to a full-time position as the other Year 2 teacher. Alita and Jenny will continue to work closely to continue the quality educational outcomes being achieved by all Year 2 students.
To accommodate the Year 2 and Year 7 split, the following classroom allocations will be in place for the first day of Term 3:
- Building 2
The Year 9 cohort will be relocated to Building 2, at the front of the College. - Building 3
Mrs Preston’s Year 4 class will be relocated to Building 4 (resulting in Year 1, and the two Year 2’s, plus Year 3 all being located within Building 3). - Building 4
Year 5 and the two Year 6 classrooms will remain the same as Semester 1 – now joined by Year 4 (Mrs Preston). - Building 5
Dance studio, the two Year 8 classes and the Year 10’s classroom allocations will remain unchanged. - Building 6
One Year 7 class (Homeroom teacher Mr Wareing) will be in the Science (second) classroom. The other Year 7 (Homeroom teacher Miss Mann) will be in L5 within the Kelly library.
Teaching Team Changes
With the increasing advancement of the Sporting Academy (currently 80 Elite and Development program students within the Tennis, Dance and Football Academy) Mr Freudigmann will reduce his HPE workload (Mr Wareing will teach Years 7 – 10 HPE) to allow for the additional demands on his Sports Coordinator, Sporting Academy Liason, and Senior School Coordinator roles. Mr Freudigmann will continue to deliver the Sports Science program for Middle and Secondary Sporting Academy students. Miss Mann will be delivering the Junior School Health and Physical Education program – Prep to Year 5.
Although the splitting of classes has resulted in the reallocation of some members of the Teaching Team, considerable effort by the Leadership team has ensured that all students are taught in all subjects by specialists in their academic field.
‘The Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER) this week released analysis of data collected from Trends in International Mathematics & Science Study (TIMSS). The analysis revealed almost 1 in 4 Year 8 Australian students are taught by out-of-field maths teachers, compared to 1 in 10 internationally.’ Independent Schools Queensland
Sporting Academy
Mr Freudigmann and Mr Wilkes have been working together to continually improve the outcomes of the Sunshine Coast Sporting Academy.
Commencing in Term 3, to ensure the priority of academic engagement by Elite and Development program students, schedule ‘Reading Days’ or training laydays will be incorporated into all team training programs.
Individual students will also be able to implement their ‘Golden card’ that will allow three exclusions from training (no ramifications) per term to attend to academic endeavour or personal matters.
Additional information will be forwarded to Sporting Academy families.
Semester 1 Reports
The Semester 1 Reports are into the proof reading and publishing phase, with the Teaching Team working diligently to incorporate student final assessment results.
Semester 1 Reports will be emailed to parents/carers early in the first week of the mid-year holiday.
Commemorative Artwork for Wendy Machin
Retired PBC Home Economics/Hospitality teacher Mrs Heather May has been using her established mosaic skills to create a fitting commemorative artwork for her teaching colleague and close friend Wendy Machin.
The commemorative mosaic artwork has been installed in a prominent location within the Kelly Library.
On Friday the 19th June at 1:30pm, Heather will reveal the art work to Middle & Secondary students, and special guests Greg Barber (Wendy’s partner) who will be accompanied by Wendy’s sister and mother.
All parents and friends are welcome to attend.

Senior Education and Training Planning
KIMBERLEY ILIFFE
For the past two weeks, Gary Freudigmann and I have had the privilege of meeting with parents and students from our year 10 cohort to create their individualised SET Plan. (Senior Education and Training).
These interviews provide us the opportunity to help our students map out how they will work towards their QCE or ATAR pathways. We gather information to determine their interests and objectives around work experience, University or RTO study options and future career goals. By doing this, we create a solid understanding of how PBC can best support our students to work and achieve success.
If you have yet to book an appointment for these interviews, please contact one of our lovely admin team to arrange a time.
Year 5C
HEATH CAHALAN
Year 5 Science
As part of the Year 5 Science unit for Semester 1, students were required to test how animal blubber worked (animal adaptations).
Students placed their hands in cold water with and without a layer of blubber (vegetable fat) and timed it. Based on the facial expressions of these photos, 5C thinks it’s pretty obvious as to who had blubber and who did not.
Note: No penguins were harmed in the making of this experiment.
Year 6D and Prep B
SAVANNAH DAVIS
BUDDY Class
This term, we have joined classes on Friday afternoons to participate in fun activities including mini games, puzzles and buddy reading.
Year 6 students are paired with Prep students to create a safe and welcoming school environment.
The students are always excited to visit their buddies!
Year 6D and 6H
SAVANNAH DAVIS, SHARON HEMMINGS AND JOSHUA MCMULLEN
Multicultural Day!
To bring the Year 6 History unit on ‘the Development of Australia as a Nation’ to a close, we celebrated a Multicultural Day. Students researched their chosen migrant group and showcased their findings. Parents and others were invited to enjoy the afternoon with us (Year 6 group). The students looked amazing in their costumes, and the food tasted delicious!
Mr Cahalan’s Year 5 student feedback:
“Loved all of it – they could explain information about their country at the snap of a finger.” – Cameron
“Costumes were very detailed; they played their role well and their posters were high quality.” – Noah
“Two things: their accents and food preparation were great.” – Sanzia
