Principal’s Report

WAYNE KENNEDY

Dear Parents,

Thank you to all that were able to attend the Parent/Teacher Interviews

on the 3rd and 4th May. The feedback from parents and teachers alike was extremely positive; with interview discussions generating clarity and future strategies for ongoing academic advancement. The interview process provided that valuable opportunity to recalibrate our students’ academic, social and wellbeing goals. Please be advised that the Teaching Team are always pleased to schedule face-to-face or TEAM meetings or to consistently communicate via email.  The Leadership Team also appreciate the feedback and perspectives shared by families throughout the two evenings.

I would also like to thank all parents for the patience and flexibility that was displayed on Monday 9th May and again this afternoon; to navigate and accommodate the flash flooding that is affected the Sunshine Coast.  Once again, our resilient education community has overcome inclement weather obstacles to ensure academic objectives remained paramount.  A special thank you to Angie , Madi , Michelle , and Leisha for organising and running the Mother’s Day stall on Thursday 5th May -I am sure that there were some extremely pleased mums on Mother’s Day.

NAPLAN

This week has seen our Year 3, 5, 7 & 9 students complete the: Writing, Reading, and Conventions of Language components of the 2022 NAPLAN testing. The Numeracy component will be conducted on Monday 16th May – Year 3 & 5s commencing at 9am and the Year 7 & 9 commencing at 11am.  For students that have been absent this week, catch-up testing will also be undertaken next Monday & Tuesday. The students have been well prepared academically for the NAPLAN testing, with minimal test anxiety evident and a positive level of confidence displayed from all students present their best. We have had a very smooth NAPLAN week, with 2022 being the first year that we have implemented individual student devices.  Thank you to students, parents and teachers for ensuring that all individual student devices had the NAP app installed, with all devices appropriately charged and audio equipment in good order.

Guidance and Wellbeing

The College has secured Guidance Officer and Wellbeing Coordinator, Hailey Clifton, to join our Teaching Team at the commencement of Term 3 (Hailey is completing contractual agreements with Kawana Waters State School for the remainder of Term 2). Hailey is an extremely well qualified and experienced Guidance Officer, who will enhance and advance the quality programs being provide by existing PBC Youth Worker Kimberley Iliffe.

Under 8’s Week

The Junior School are keen to participate in Under 8’s week, however due to inclement weather and room allocations this will take place early in Term 3.

Library News

Hello students and families

Issue 3 of Scholastic Book Club was received earlier this week and has since been delivered to those students that placed orders.  I hope you are all enjoying reading your new books (the weather is certainly conducive to readying right now!)  I purchased a set of Aaron Blabey’s ‘The Bad Guys’ books for the library, which I know will please many junior readers.

I was fortunate (and excited) to receive an invitation from a college family to attend the Noosa Rotary Book Festival recently and discovered many books worthy of purchasing.  Mr Kennedy helped me fill up a trolley with them and they now await coding and covering before they can be displayed.  Football, surfing, cooking, puppies, earth facts and poetry are just a handful of themes that will be available for borrowing in the coming weeks.

Yours in reading

YEAR 2

EMMA BOURNE

Grade 2’s are learning about Advertising in Health this term. They made BEAUTIFUL posters advertising our Amazing, Wonderful, Fantastic school.

ART NEWS

JOEL GREEN

Grade 5 art

During Term 1, grade 5 students learned how Indigenous Australians create and use rock art to communicate ideas and tell stories that are common to their communities establishing a deep connection with ancestors and country.

In groups, students discussed a range of things which they had in common and could be told through visual imagery. Students shared stories of floods, sporting triumphs and first days at school. Once students agreed on an idea, they worked on ways it could visually depicted to tell their story. After sharing their ideas with the class students began creating textured backgrounds and painting their imagery.

Students reflected on this process by writing individual artist statements that accompany these artworks.

Grade 2 art

Grade 2’s have been learning about warm and cool colours. They have used water colour to create sun and moon paintings to show their new knowledge of colour.

Grade 3 crazy critters

During Term 1, grade 3 students were introduced to the design process. This followed the formula of being given a brief, drafting, and presenting ideas, making and finalising as well as reflecting and evaluating their own artworks.

Students were presented with the assignment of making and designing a crazy critter that would feature as the main character in a short story that they would also write and illustrate.

Students reflected on this process by writing individual artist statements that would accompany their artworks.

During the making of their crazy critters, students learned techniques to create a pinch pot, joining and preserving clay as well as painting and glazing of their final product.

Nesting Boxes – Land for Wildlife

A few weeks ago, I put out a request for any handy parents who were willing and able to make wildlife nesting boxes. Our original boxes had started to rot and were losing their lids and bottoms. When we found one of our possums sitting on top of his bottomless nesting box on a rainy day, I thought a newsletter article was worth a shot.

David and Matt Reed, and Rory and Estee Finlay got to work over the Easter holidays and have made 8 new boxes. Thank you so much for this fantastic effort. Rory is a Rope Technician and has kindly offered to install them too – so Pepe and Harry you are off the hook!

Yet another reason we love our PBC community!

Last week, a group of PBC students travelled to Noosa Surf Club to take part of the Surf Life Saving Education program. The program aims to equip students with the necessary skills and tools to not only have knowledge of water safety but also feel confidence in their ability to safely participate in aquatic activities.
