Principal’s Report
WAYNE KENNEDY
Dear Parents and Caregivers,
The last day of Term 3 has arrived, with students and teachers working diligently to finalise assessment and complete any outstanding task before embarking on a well-earned holiday. Since the last newsletter the following activities have been undertaken in conjunction with a rigorous education program:
- Middle School Camp
- Junior School Maranatha Camp (Year 3 & 4, Year 2 day visit)
- Under 8’s Day – Reptile to You incursion
- Japan Day – Yaiko Drum Performance & Workshops
- College Open Day
- Father’s Day Stall
- Mario Cart Tournament
- Participation (Year 5 & 6) in the Sunshine Coast Lightening Netball Event.
- Evacuation drills
- Kindy & Prep Speech & Language Screening
- Queensland Fire and Emergency Services – Fire safety/ Fire truck visit
- Electricity Safety Week
- Bunnings School Veggie Garden Program – incursion
- Noosa Regional Art Gallery excursion (Year 11 & 12 Visual Art Students)
It is no wonder that the Year 1 students and teachers were that ‘worn out’ that they needed to wear their pyjamas to school today.
I had the opportunity to supervise the Year 12 Mock examinations conducted throughout the week. The dedication and maturity show towards the examinations by our Year 12 students was commendable. The feedback that our Senior Teaching Team will provide the Year 12 students after the holidays, will prove extremely valuable in final preparations for the QCAA External Examinations scheduled for 24th October – 15th November 2022. I also attended the Year 3D class and viewed some quality work samples, that had been undertaken to provide healthier canteen menu options, with nutritional content the priority. The Year 9 Food Technologies students have also been undertaking assessment tasks that investigated nutrition rich canteen menu options. I look forward to the implementation of healthier choices within our college canteen.
Year 3 Fundraiser
I am very pleased to report that the Year 3 initiated fundraiser for the ‘Children’s Hospital Foundation’ was extremely well supported by the College community. Proceeds from the Senior Schools sausage sizzle and the Junior Schools bake sale raised $1244.50. Thank you to all families that provided baked goods. A special thank you to all Year 3 students (and Miss Davis & Mrs Golding) for enthusiastically participated in the organisation and sales – and for having so much fun throughout the whole fundraiser process.
Basketball Program
All Sunshine Coast Sporting Academy Male basketball trials have now been completed. I would like to thank all that participated in the events leading up to and including the two-trial taster and Sports Science testing sessions. The standard of trialist was extremely high, with Jordan Page and the basketball coaching team looking to deliver a program, that we envisage will enhance player development in the basketball space not only on the Sunshine Coast but Queensland as a whole. Offers to students for ‘Elite or Development’ basketball programs have been forwarded. Mr Freudigmann this week held meetings with selected Basketball Academy families in Years 10, 11 & 12 (in 2023), to not only plot an appropriate academic pathway for QCE/ATAR goals, but also to meet the requirements needed to be eligible for entry into the United States College system.
Sporting Academy Director, Mr Melvyn Wilkes has in recent weeks been communicating with ex-Australian International ‘Opals’ player Kathleen Macleod; and the College is pleased to announce that Kathleen will be the Female Basketball Academy coach for the commencement of the Female Full-time Basketball Program – proposed for commencement in Term 2 2023. I will provide dates and times for trial /taster days in forthcoming newsletter editions.
Netball Program
On the evenings of the 22nd August, and the 12th September, Netball Expression of Interest Information sessions were undertaken within the Kelly library. I would like to extend my thanks for those students and parents that attended. Mr Wilkes is currently in discussions with potential candidates to head up the Full-Time Netball program. It is envisaged that the College will hold a ‘Roll-Out’ event in Term 4, to provide opportunity for parents/ guardians and student athletes to meet coaches and listen to how the program will be delivered. Trial / taster sessions will follow, comprising Sport Science testing and data collection, academic classroom visits and a practical netball coaching block.
Learn to Swim
In Term 4 (Tuesday 11th October to Thursday 17th November 2022), the Peregian Swim School will be commencing a learn-to-swim program at our college pool. Gen, Narelle & Graeme Brewer will be implementing their vast experience to instruct Prep to Year 3 students in water safety and awareness, and to advance swimming skills. The swimming lessons will take place between 9am – 10:30am on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday mornings. I look forward to welcoming the Brewer family back to the College.
Middle and Senior Information Evening
On Tuesday 18th October (Week 3 of Term 4) Mr Dupuy and Mr Freudigmann will be hosting an Information Evening for our current Year 4 students transitioning into the Middle School and for our current Year 8 transitioning into the Senior Secondary. Middle and Senior Secondary staff will be in attendance to convey subject specific information and to support in elective selection.
All individual student reports for the 2022 National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) tests have been distributed to Years 3, 5, 7 & 9 students today.
Monday 3rd October is gazetted for the Queen’s Birthday in Queensland. Professional Development days at PBC in Term 4 take place at the end of the term. The first day for Term 4 will be Tuesday 4th October.
I wish all a safe and enjoyable Spring break.
Library News
Hello students and families
It’s been a wonderful term in the Kelly Library. We have all enjoyed Book Week and the beautiful art that has been on display throughout the building.
Next term, Week 4 (24-27 October), brings us our Annual Scholastic Book Fair. Last year we ran our first Book Fair and I am hoping that this years will be bigger and better! I will keep you updated as we get closer to the dates.
Thank you to those families who are donating books. Please keep these coming. We have had quite a few book series donated which are perfect for those students who find an author they want to read and then read the entire series.
We have many overdue library books – if you locate any over the break please send these back to me at the beginning of Term 4.
Wishing you all safe and enjoyable holidays with your loved ones. I hope you all find a book to delve into during your break.
Yours in reading

Children’s Hospital Fundraiser
On Monday of Week 8, Year 3 students held a fundraiser to raise money for the Children’s Hospital Foundation. The students sold yummy treats such as cupcakes, lemonade, cookies and fruit sticks. Thank you, Year 3 families, for your donation. All students at PBC were very keen to try the delicious treats on offer. In Week 7, Mr Green and the seniors held a sausage sizzle to also assist with raising money. It was so great to see everyone involved in these events.
A special thank you to the teachers who helped at both events and also to Year 3D student Maya who had the wonderful idea of raising money for the Children’s Hospital Foundation.
Altogether we raised $1212.50!!!
Prep – Year 6

Japan Day
An amazing day was had by the Prep to Year 6 students on Tuesday 6th September celebrating the college’s first ever JAPAN DAY!
The students enjoyed an incredible performance by the members of Kizuna Taiko from the Gold Coast. They were able to practise some of the Japanese they had learnt in class and share with the performers.
Year 5 and 6 students also participated in an amazing workshop, learning the Japanese drum skills. As well as enjoying some super delicious sushi from Sushi Wave in Peregian Beach.
In the weeks leading up to Japan Day, the students worked hard on designing their own ‘Hachimaki’ (headbands) to celebrate their learning of Japanese. They all wore these in great style on Japan Day!
It was a successful day enjoyed by all. We can’t wait till next year!

Measurement Play
This term, the Preps have been learning about length, mass and capacity. During our discovery play time, we found lots of exciting things to measure in many of different ways! Miss Blahuta was very proud of how the Preps could place different items in order to show the lightest and heaviest items, how much or little something could hold or how tall or short their animals were. Great work, Preps!
Year 1
TENIELE ADLER & ALAINA NEALAND
Safety Unit
As part of our unit on safety, Year 1 were super excited to have the team from Coolum Fire Station come and visit PBC. The aim of the Fire Education program is to assist students to develop an understanding of the dangers of fire and the appropriate response should they be in a situation where a fire is involved.
The Fire Ed program engages students to promote their understanding of:
- Good and bad fires
- The dangers of smoke
- Dialling 000 in an emergency
- The role of the emergency services in helping in a fire emergency
- Safety around fires
- Having a school and home escape plan
A big thank you to firefighters Ryan, Ben , Jesse, Clarky and the rest of the team.

3G – Health & Technologies
Year 3 designed and made their own healthy pizzas this morning to wrap up their term studies about health, nutrition, food and fibre production and food technologies.
3D Buddy Class
Every Monday afternoon, Year 3D visit Prep B to assist with their reading. Students sit with their buddies and they take turns reading a page aloud. This benefits the Year 3s in gaining leadership skills, responsibility and pride in their ability to be helpful. It also helps the Preps feel safe and welcoming to our school community when positive relationships are formed with the older students.
The students are always excited for Buddy Class!
Year 4
RACHEL PRESTON
Bunnings Visit
Year 4 were lucky enough to enlist the help of Siobhan and Tara from Noosaville Bunnings to help plant their very own vegetable garden. Our Year 4’s have studied life cycles and ecosystems in Science so this was a great way to bring their studies to life. As part of their local community assistance program, Bunnings donated soil, seedlings, compost, mulch and even pest nets! Now it’s over to Year 4 to continue the care and maintenance of the vegetable garden!
Year 3 & Year 4 Camp
Maranatha
The Year 3 and Year 4 students had such a great time at Camp Marantha this week. They arrived at camp with smiles on their faces on Monday morning and returned back to school very tired on Wednesday afternoon. The Year 2 students also joined the camp for the day on Tuesday. The giant swing was definitely a memorable activity for all students. Students also enjoyed roasting marshmallows around the camp fire on the first night.
Thank you Ms Carpenter, Mrs Golding, Ms Preston, Ms Bourne, Ms Davis, Mr Bowers and Ms Dutoit for making sure all students had the best time!
Movement
Skateboarding
PBC movement is on a roll! Thursday movement at Chiggys indoor skatepark in Coolum has been a huge success! Students have spent the term developing their skateboarding skills in a safe and encouraging environment. Many students who had little to no skate experience are now mastering the basics like dropping in on a half-pipe and doing a few simple tricks! Mr. Wright and Mr Rogers have not permanently injured themselves either which is a huge win!
