Principal’s Report

WAYNE KENNEDY

Dear Families,

Welcome to the first addition of the Emu Chronicle for 2022.

Although COVID-19 directives have impacted on some planned college initiatives, (with remote learning ensuring an unorthodox, but in reflection, a productive start to the College’s academic year) the return to face-to-face teaching has without question been embraced by the college community.

I would like to acknowledge our college community for their unwavering compliance to the Queensland Government COVID-19 directives.  The open parent communication with administration, to clarify directives and to undertake the appropriate precautions, has ensured that the college has had very limited COVID-19 cases, with our teaching team remaining unaffected, enabling student learning to be continuous.  The College has received an additional supply of Rapid Antigen Tests, and I encourage all families, if COVID-19 symptoms arise to have administration provide all with a Rapid Antigen Test.

As has been conveyed in recent email correspondence, the student numbers at the College are now at 338 students. The Leadership team are mindful of the impact that an increase in student numbers has on achieving the College’s overarching goal of enabling each of our students to realise their full academic, social, cultural, sporting and community potential. To achieve this goal, quality individual rapport between teacher and student is paramount and class size does have impact on these dynamics.  The Leadership Team are pleased with the distribution of our current student population, with current class numbers being conducive to supporting quality educational goals. The current class numbers are:

Junior School

Ms Carpenter (Junior School Coordinator) has reported that all students within our Junior School have transitioned smoothly into their new classrooms and are positively engaging with subject matter and their teachers.  It has been rewarding to witness our Prep students comfortably settled within their Prep learning environments.

Middle School

New and existing Middle School teachers, within staff meeting discussions (COVID-19 distancing guidelines enforced), have consistently stated what an inclusive and academically focussed cohort of students we have within our 2022 Middle School.

Senior School

All Senior School Homeroom classes (Year 9-12) are now located within the Kelly Library. New playground areas have been established to accommodate this relocation. Mr Freudigmann (Senior School Coordinator) and Mrs Iliffe (Youth Support) have held a number of discussions with students and parents to ensure that the most appropriate subject selections are now secured, to support students with future career and study pathways.

Canteen News

The new canteen facility has been well received by students, parents, teachers, and canteen staff.  Discussions have been generated amongst the teaching team to revigorated our canteen menu, with student and parent input strongly encouraged. The canteen menu will be placed high on the Parents and Friends Committee agenda, when restrictions allow.  Thank you to all that participated in the Remote Learning Feedback survey, your responses are valued and will influences remote learning processes in the future.

Movement

The Movement program (Thursday afternoons Period 5 & 6) continues to be guided by Queensland Government COVID-19 directives; however, the energy, enthusiasm and fun being generated within the Term 1 Mini Sporting House Tabloid Competition has been wonderful to experience – yesterday sunshine made for an enjoyable afternoon for all.

Inclusive Education

Ms Carpenter’s Inclusive Education team, which includes teachers Ms Lisa Bell and Mrs Emma Bourne, and valued Educational Support Officers (Miss Charmaine Schou, Mrs Renee Brown, Ms Brooke Allen, Mr Ben Conquest and Mr Chris Holland) have this week implemented the new Inclusive Education timetable to support our verified students, and to assist in the implementation of differentiated curriculum across the sectors. The Inclusive Education team, within our Minds program (Tuesday afternoons Periods 5 & 6), have provided learning support to individual students and small groups – with English, Numeracy and Social Skills being the focus.

Car Park

As conveyed, increases in student numbers require modifications to occur in a range of areas. Our college carpark has also been affected by these increases.  To accommodate the parking congestion at 3:00pm, parents have resorted to parking on the grassed area, to the south of the carpark.  Could I please request that parents refrain from doing so?  It has been proposed that the teaching team park their vehicles at specified locations on campus, to provide additional spaces for parents.  This proposal will be implemented next week.  It is hoped that this will eliminate the necessity for parents to use the car park as a second ‘drop/pickup zone’. The outcome of this proposal will be monitored. As has been reported the ‘drop/pick zone’ roadway has been resealed, however a small section of the entry driveway still requires taring and hopefully weather conditions will allow this to occur soon.  Drainage clearing has been undertaken at the front of the college to assist in the dispersal of water from the college entrance.

Art News

JOEL GREEN

Year 2 – 6

This week in Art, grades 2 – 6 participated in a whole school “drip” mural. Students experimented and learned about how the elements of colour and line can be used to draw the viewers eye to a point in the room. It was also a great opportunity for students to get used to their new surroundings in the new art room, which is now located in building 5, as well as their new teacher, (myself) Mr Green.

Year 9 – 10

The year 9 and 10 Art class have been learning about the element of colour and how this can be used to convey emotion, meaning, and feeling in an artwork. Students learned how to mix different tints and shades of a colour, by starting with only the three primary colours. Students then applied this new knowledge into the making of one of their own, monochromatic artworks.

Year 11 – 12

Year 11 and 12 students have started working on their first Internal Assessment, a self-directed inquiry into the production of a body of artworks. These artworks will be in response to a stimulus excursion to Boreen Point which took place in Term 4 2021. This preliminary experimental artwork (face made from clay) was created by year 11 student, Arabella N.
