Principal’s Report

SHANE DUPUY

As part of our Staff Appraisal process, this week, I had the pleasure of visiting classes to observe teaching staff. Whilst it can sometimes seem daunting having a peer watching on as you ply your trade, personally, I have found it extremely beneficial, inspiring and uplifting. The quality of teaching I have witnessed is excellent and the students have been challenged, engaged and excited, which was brilliantly reflected in the completed tasks.

With the Olympics currently taking place, it is easy to draw many similarities between our teachers and the elite men and women representing their countries in Paris. Just as these elite athletes aspire to be the best and inspire all those watching, held to scrutiny by ‘armchair experts’ such as myself, teachers aim to do the same. They are held to the same level of account by their students, who are driven to achieve the best grades they can in an assessment, or by parents, who naturally want the very best education for their child.

Further similarities are evident when you consider both have dedicated years to refine their skills, athletes in the pool or track, teachers in universities and participating in professional development sessions. There has been meticulous preparation of training programs and unit plans and an unwavering sense of commitment, passion and teamwork. Athletes must overcome obstacles and setbacks, such as injuries, lack of resourcing or change of coach, whilst teachers have their own challenges such as new students that require some form of intervention, a change in timetable or heaven forbid, the internet dropping out. Whatever the case, those that rise to the top all demonstrate the same personal qualities of persistence, resilience and a desire for excellence.

Whilst we may not hand out gold medals to our teaching team, the way they prepare, inspire and set a fantastic example of human qualities for their students, I am left with no doubt, they need to be celebrated in the same vein as our olympic champions.

What’s Happening in Term 3

We have an exciting line-up of events and activities for our students and families to look forward to this term. We are thrilled to have supported the Pyjama Foundation, promoting literacy and education for children in foster care. Additionally, we will be supporting Jeans for Genes Day, raising funds and awareness for genetic research.

We also look forward to a visit from Life Education in Week 5, where students will participate in sessions aimed at promoting healthy lifestyles and well-being.

Our school is taking part in Anti-Bullying Week in Week 6 to raise awareness and encourage a safe and supportive school environment for all. At the end of Week 6, our Year 6 students will embark on their camp adventure, offering a fantastic opportunity for growth and bonding. Later in Week 10, students in Years 2, 3, and 4 will have their camp experiences, providing fun and educational activities outside the classroom. Meanwhile, our senior students in Year 11 and 12 will be undertaking their exam block, an important time for their academic progress.

Throughout the term, we have more well-being days scheduled in the high school, ensuring our students’ mental and emotional health is prioritised. Our amazing Mind & Movement program is in full swing, promoting physical activity and mindfulness practices. We are also delighted to host Japanese student visitors on-site for a two-week period, offering a wonderful cultural exchange experience.

Looking ahead to Term 4, the whole school is currently eagerly planning for the PBC Fete, an event that promises to be filled with fun and community spirit.

Amidst all these exciting activities, we remind our students to find time for learning and to make the most of every opportunity. We look forward to a fantastic Term 3 together!

Library News

Hello Readers

Book Club Issue 5 closed this week therefore orders are expected next week.  As soon as these arrive I will deliver them to students.

Our very first Library Soft Toy Sleepover took place last weekend.  Prep, Year 1 and Year 2 students each gave me one of their special toys to care for over the course of the weekend.  Check out the story book in the link below!  The toys had a blast.  There was disco, pizza, stories, pampering, more stories, hide and seek (I had to keep doing headcounts!), toast and honey in the garden, games and even Damo The Builder got involved.  The children enjoyed my recount of the event and were happy to have their toys back.  Memorable moments indeed.

If you want to see what the soft toys got up to during the sleepover please click on the image below:

Yours in reading every day

Careers Presentation – Sports Science & High-Performance Athletics Program (UniSC)

This fortnight, students in senior were treated to a presentation by Adam Robertshaw, from UniSC. Adam wears several hats: Strength and Conditioning Coach, Sessional Academic and an Assistant Coach (Lightning Netball League). Adam discussed the Clinical Exercise Science Physiology degree (4 years; ATAR 60) and the Sport and Exercise Science degree (3 years; ATAR 50). He also gave students more information about the High-Performance Student Athlete Program, which may appeal to some of our Academy students interested in a Uni pathway. I suggest attending UniSC Open Day to find out more, speak to staff and have a tour of the facilities (for your areas of interest). Adam also said he would be willing to take students in senior for Work Experience in the Sports Science department, over school holidays.

If there is any interest in the above information for senior students, please email me for further information. I am happy to support all students in their pathways or passions.

UniSC Open Day

On Sunday 4 August, UniSC has their Open Day. This is a wonderful opportunity for prospective students and parents to see the campus, meet with staff and take part in interactive workshops from the various faculties on campus. I will be at the Open Day, and students can register to attend, following the link: https://www.usc.edu.au/study/open-day or going through the UniSC website. There will be various information sessions scheduled across the day, as well as tents to visit and ask questions and meet key support staff and teaching faculty.

Term 3 Grade 10-12 Wellbeing Day

Empowering Others With The Vision To Succeed.

The upcoming Wellbeing Day towards the end of term for students across grades 10 to 12, has a focus on empowerment, leadership and capacity. Guest speaker for the day is Mr Lorin Nicholson, who has the extraordinary ability to communicate, teach and connect people of all ages and executive status with success and higher achievement. With a lifetime of experience dealing with an impairment, his approach to motivational speaking is unique, original and fresh. From a position of presumed weakness, he skilfully juxtaposes the sharing of inspirational insights and profound messages with entertainment, storytelling, audience engagement and humour. We also look forward to a fun afternoon, with a PBC Amazing Race competition!

“Empower your journey, explore your potential, and pave your path to success! Keep striving, keep learning, and keep reaching for your dreams. Your future awaits!”

Prep News

The prep team is super proud of our PBC preppies! Last week, we celebrated 100 days of learning, and it was an unforgettable experience. Zero the Hero hobbled into our classroom instead of flying, adding a fun twist to our day.

We went on a number hunt around the college, made a 100-shaped biscuit, built towers using 100 cups, created designs with 100 objects, and used 100 beads to craft necklaces. The highlight was when the preps were transformed into 100-year-old Nannas, Grandpas, Grannies, and Pa’s.

Please enjoy this video highlighting some of these special moments.

Sporting Achievements

Basketball

During the school holidays the Sunshine Coast Fire Basketball Academy played and won (for the second year in a row) the Gold Coast Invitational Tournament.  They went through the tournament undefeated and won the championship with a 3 point buzzer beater from Duante M.  The boys played against the best basketball schools from Brisbane and the Gold Coast.

A huge effort by the boys and coaching staff.

Tennis

On the 22nd July we had a team enter into the Years 7-9 Sunshine Coast Tennis Tournament held at Caloundra. Despite facing formidable opposition, our school tennis team (Will. A, Dawson. W, Nixon. C, Finn. B and Lucas. H) demonstrated resilience and great sportsmanship. Each player gave their all on the court, displaying incredible determination and teamwork. While the results didn’t go our way, the team’s spirit and positive attitude were truly commendable. We are proud of their efforts and look forward to their continued growth and success in future matches. Well done, team!

Noosa Districts Track and Field – 10 – 12 Years

On July 23rd, twenty talented young athletes from Peregian Beach College, ages 10-12, showcased their skills and sportsmanship at the Noosa District Track and Field event held at Girreween Sports Complex. These students represented our school with immense pride, giving their all in every event while maintaining a supportive and encouraging atmosphere throughout the competition.

The dedication and competitive spirit of our students were evident as they participated in various track and field events, demonstrating excellent sportsmanship and teamwork. Among the standout performances, a special mention goes to Zachary Nielson, who emerged as the 10-year-old boys’ aged champion. Zachary’s outstanding achievements included 1st place finishes in the 100m, 200m, and shot put events, a 2nd place in long jump, and a 3rd place in high jump.

Congratulations to Zachary for his remarkable accomplishments and to all our athletes for their hard work and determination. Your efforts have made Peregian Beach College proud!
