Principal’s Report
WAYNE KENNEDY
Dear Parents and Caregivers,
Term 3 is traditionally an extremely busy, eventful, and rewarding time at the College. As Week 6 draws to a close, this has definitely been the case.
On the evening of Monday, the 22nd of August, the Expression of Interest Information Evening was conducted for prospective Sporting Academy Netball students (2023). The evening was well attended, with some quality Sporting Academy and academic questioning posed by well researched and informed parents. The interest and enthusiasm for the proposed netball program is encouraging. The Netball Academy will be a progressive program to develop students from Year 3 to Year 12. The program will comprise a comprehensive Sports Science program, as well as individual and team training programs, with an anticipated 16 hours of training each week, carefully integrated into our education program. A second Netball Academy Information Evening with take place within the Kelly library at 6pm on Monday 12nd September 2022. (Enquires: sport@pbc.qld.edu.au)
The 2022 Book Week celebrations, held on Tuesday 23rd, were thoroughly enjoyed by all involved. This year’s theme “Dreaming with eyes open…” acknowledged Australia’s First Nations People and their rich story-based culture. Ms Tania (Librarian) did an amazing job incorporating Dreamtime stories into Book Week displays and library lesson activities. Thank you to all parents for your creativity in preparing student Book Week costumes – the students all looked amazing. A special thank you to the large number of parents that were able to adjust work schedules to attend the Book Week celebrations. Sherlock Holmes (Mr Wright) and Dr Watson (Ms Tania) kept all entertained, as they searched for clues to ‘find’ the Children’s Book Council book awards – a memorable afternoon.
Our Year 12 students took a brief break from study, on the afternoon of the Book Week celebrations, to attend Ten Bowling at Maroochydore. This team building exercise was thoroughly enjoyed by senior students and teachers, especially the extremely competitive Mrs Bell and Mr Freudigmann who remained a strike ahead of their Year 12 challengers.
On Wednesday, the vibrant Niki Andrinopooulus facilitated the College’s annual Life Education program. All student from Prep – Year 6 participated in the program and received awareness and information on topics such as: My Body Matters (Prep), Ready, Steady, Go (Year 1), Growing Good Friends (Year 2), Mind Your Medicine (Year 3), All Systems Go (Year 4), Relate Respect Connect (Year 5) and Think Twice (Year 6). The feedback from students and the Teaching Team was extremely positive.
The preparations for the Year 3 initiated ‘Children’s Hospital Foundation’ fundraiser are well underway. Miss Davis, Mrs Golding and their 3D & 3G classes have been collaborating with other Junior school classes to create a baking schedule in preparation for the Week 8 event (Monday 5th of September – 12:25 – 1:15pm.) The Senior school will be showing their support by hosting a sausage sizzle on Friday 2nd September, with all proceeds being presented to Year 3 students for inclusion in the ‘Children’s Hospital Foundation’ fundraiser.
On Monday the 29th of August, prospective Basketball Academy students will trial with coach Jordan Page to gain selection into the Sunshine Coast Sporting Academy Basketball program. Twenty-five trial students will attend academic classes in Periods 1 & 2 (Years 6-12), before being transported to the University of the Sunshine Coast to begin basketball trials and undertake Sports Science testing and information gathering with Bruno Pena Couto (Associate Professor of Sports Science). We wish all trial students all the best, including current PBC students Max D, Aston I, Nate M, and Jake B.
The College would also like to wish all students participating in the Southeast Queensland Cup event (Stage 3 – Monday 29th of August 2022) all the best.
The Leadership Team are currently preparing for curriculum offerings, teaching team class allocations, and clarifying proposed after-hours educational programs (Tutoring, Homework clubs, Music and Art programs for 2023). The Teaching Team are presently completing preference sheets for year levels and subject areas to be taught next year. Semester 1 & 2 (2023) timetabling planning has commenced (however, student subject selection will impact on certain courses running) with a new structure (additional electives) and subjects being offered in Year 10, to better support our students with transitioning into Year 11. Mr Freudigmann and I look forward to sharing the details of these new initiatives within forthcoming subject selection information evenings and newsletter reports.
Please share with friends that the College will be conducting an Open Day on Tuesday 30th August.
Book Week Costume Parade
Hello students and families
What a huge success our Book Week Parade was this week. I would like to personally thank our host, Sherlock Holmes, for presenting a mysterious and clue finding parade to the delight of our amazing students who dressed up in some of the best costumes I’ve ever had the pleasure of seeing. Thank you also to those families that attended and were treated to a spectacular show.
Memorable and stand-out characters included; a faraway tree, Constantino the Magician, a serpent in a hand-sewn costume, a lego block, a Wonka chocolate bar, Gru, Pikachu, a delightful fox, Mary Poppins, a samurai, an indoor cat, the Lorax, Sean the Sheep…. it was everything I imagined and more.

CAMP
Last week, Middle School students and teachers travelled out to Kenilworth Homestead for a stunning 4-day camp. Situated on the river on the outskirts of town, this amazing site was the perfect setting for students to have fun with their friends whilst participating in a range of activities which included: raft building, canoeing, mountain biking, crate stacking, orienteering and camping out in tents overnight off site. The activity instructors were excellent, and I was so proud of the way PBC students demonstrated a level of respect and engagement with them. Students slept in cabins of 8 and for the most part, fell asleep quickly; once the sugar rush from the lollies they had brought with them had worn off. Teachers were able to take a back seat to their normal classroom schedules and enjoyed seeing their students in a more relaxed and less structured environment. What a great week!
A special thank you must go to the parents who prepared their students well for the 3 nights away from home. We are well-aware that for some, this was a huge challenge, and the staff are very appreciative of the trust and efforts parents went to just to get their child on the bus. However, the opportunities a camp presents such as maturity, strengthening of friendships and overcoming fears cannot be underestimated and I am confident, all students came away from the camp with positives to reflect upon.
