Principal’s Report

SHANE DUPUY

Welcome back! After what can only be described as a frenetic first term, we start Term 2 in the hope of a steadier and more familiar environment. Students should be ‘into the groove’ with class routines and clear understandings of PBC expectations, enabling them to achieve success and be the best they can be.

During the break, we had students travelling to Cairns for football and Adelaide for  basketball. Both groups represented the College with pride, and we applaud them for their commitment and efforts.

Congratulations must also be extended to past student Olivia T, who had her narrative ‘The Stray Dog’ published in the ‘Unleashed’ magazine. This is an amazing achievement for someone so young and just reward for her outstanding efforts in the classroom. Recognition must also go to Olivia’s past teachers, including Miss Preston who worked closely with Olivia last year.

Building Program

Construction of the new sport auditorium site got under way as soon as the holidays began. Heavy earthmoving equipment was brought on site to remove the old basketball court and fencing before thousands of tonnes of product was brought in to raise the level for the slab. At around 48m x 39m, it’s going to be a fantastic undercover space, big enough to hold many whole school events.

In the next few weeks, we are expecting the arrival of our new demountable buildings. These will provide us with 4 extra classrooms. There will also be new toileting facilities attached. I expect these new rooms to become available for use in the second half of the year once services have been connected and external works such as decking, ramps and fly over roofing has been completed.

ANZAC Day

The college came together on Monday afternoon for a whole school assembly to commemorate ANZAC Day. Students had the opportunity to reflect upon the sacrifices others made for the freedoms they enjoy. A special mention must go to Ms. Chloe Hetherington, who did a fantastic job of not only coordinating the assembly, but also arranged to have members of the armed services as well as military vehicles onsite for students to explore.

On Tuesday, PBC students joined me in representing the College at the Coolum/Peregian RSL Dawn Service. Our college leaders, Tobias and Zoe respectfully laid a wreath on behalf of the College.

Library News

 Hello Families

Book Club Issue 2 was delivered to Prep – Year 6 classrooms last week.

Minecraft, football, Pokemon, Wings of Fire to name a few of the good reads for children available in this issue.

**Online orders close Friday 5 May**

Here is the link to order your Book Club:  Scholastic Book Club

May I congratulate every family that returns library books – well done!  This means that our college does not need to re-purchase books that get lost or damaged.  With that in mind, may I remind you to ensure library books are placed in library bags and returned to school on the day of your child’s library lesson.   With your help I would like to see the number of lost books reduce this year.

Please keep the book donations coming, I am appreciative
of every single book, as are our student bookworms.
These can either be delivered to the library or
dropped in at the admin building.

Yours in reading every day
Miss Tania, Librarian

Junior School Term 2
Welcome back everyone to what is set to be a busy term. It’s hard to believe it’s already the end of Week 2. I would like to extend a special thank you to all those who participated in a beautiful commemorative ANZAC service at PBC on Tuesday. I would also like to thanks to Raymond and Carlie Grzyb, who organised our military vehicles, accompanying personnel and our guest speaker. Thank you also the Miss Hetherington and the Year 1 students for their organisation and wonderful contribution.

Curriculum and leave application processes
All students (with the exception of Prep) now have access to the week-by-week overview for the term ahead, for each subject. This can be found in the Teams platform. If you have any questions about these overviews please see your child’s classroom teacher. They are a guide only. If you plan to take your child out of school for extended leave beyond 2 a day duration, please note that this needs to be sent as a written request to the coordinators, who will then review the request with the Principal. Leave application processes are mandated by our governing body. If absences are unavoidable, the overviews are a great place to look and follow along with, so that work is not missed, and students are not disadvantaged. Catching up on missed work due to absences is the responsibility of the child (or in the younger grades, their families and/or carers).

Excursions and events
There are a number of excursions and events taking place this term, please ensure that you stay abreast of all email communication regarding these exciting plans. Teachers will advise you when their classes are hosting an assembly.

Classroom happenings
I have had the pleasure of joining in with a number of classroom activities recently. It has been wonderful to observe the teachers in action and the students enjoying their learning, in diverse, challenging and fun ways. I would like to take this opportunity to formally acknowledge the incredible efforts that all of our Junior School teachers put in to teaching our beautiful PBC children. They really do go above and beyond. If you didn’t have an opportunity to make yourself available for interviews last week with your child’s teacher, I would highly recommend you pop by and say hello to see what is happening in the classroom at some stage this term.

What a fabulous start to Term 2. Students are looking amazing dressed in their school uniforms and are all following our new procedure if they happen to be out of uniform.

What do you do if you are out of uniform without a note?
I realise that from time-to-time things can go wrong… come in and have a conversation with me. We will work out a solution!

What happens if I am out of uniform a lot?

Year 9 Leadership Opportunity
Expressions of interest are open!! Year 9 students are invited to attend ALTITUDE DAY an exciting leadership event held at Sunshine Coast University.  Altitude Day is an annual one-day event created to empower Year 9 students during this important stage in their school journey. Through a blend of inspirational talks and energising group activities, students will learn how to become active and inspiring leaders of their school and community.

Students will gain advice on how to make good choices, build their confidence and make a difference from three inspiring guest speakers, all whilst forming a strong network of peers from schools across the region. Altitude Day provides an environment where students can step outside the classroom to truly understand what it means to be a leader.

At Altitude Day, students will:

  • Identify ways to have a positive impact at their school (with or without a badge)
  • Be challenged to step outside their comfort zone in a number of ways in a safe and supportive environment
  • Identify their current capacities and future opportunities
  • Reflect on the kind of leader they would like to be

Please register your interest by clicking this link and completing this online form. Expressions of interest will close on Friday 28 April.

Sporting Academy

BASKETBALL

This April, early on in our newly developed basketball academy the U16’s and U18’s boys teams had the opportunity to participate in the Easter Classic Tournament hosted in Adelaide.

The Adelaide Easter Classic Basketball Tournament has been running since 1995 and is South Australia’s premier basketball carnival presented by Adelaide Community Basketball Association (ACBA) and Norwood Basketball Club.

Our teams performed well and we are proud of every win and every loss as the game and competition experiences were very valuable to the boys. The team spirit was on FIRE and it was notable how the boys worked together to achieve the best outcomes!

Both teams ended 4th on their respective ladders – watch this space for next year! We will be back even better and even stronger!

4N

Last week Year 4N learnt about Earth Day. Students were encouraged to think and learn about what we can do to look after our planet. We learnt the importance of picking up litter, recycling, turning off lights when not in use, using eco-friendly products to reduce plastic and how we can use less water. 4N researched questions and wrote their responses in their earth day booklets. We then turned our booklets into ‘mobiles’ we can hang in our classroom to continue to remind us to look after our planet.

We will continue to train for ten weeks, then enter our very first E-Sport tournament on the Sunshine Coast.
