Principal’s Report

WAYNE KENNEDY

Dear Parents and Caregivers

At this mid-point in the term, the academic rigour throughout the College has been proudly experienced by the teaching team, with learning experiences and assessment opportunities challenging all students. Each class is working towards the finalising of the 2022 curriculum content with examinations, presentations, research tasks and collation of the year’s work at the fore.

I have provided supervision for our Year 12 students this week and it has been extremely rewarding to experience the diligence and commitment to study displayed by each Year 12 student. I must commend the Senior Secondary teachers for ensuring that our 12s were extremely well prepared for the QCAA external examinations. The Year 12 examination will continue over the next two weeks. [General Mathematics Paper 1. 2/10, Paper 2. 3/10, Psychology Paper 1. AM, Paper 2. PM 4/10, Music 8/10, Business 9/10].

The teaching team’s feedback provided with respect to our Year 11 students, [Examination block completed today], is that the College is anticipating results of considerable quality.

Excursions

The teaching team have also supplemented classroom studies with a range of excursion opportunities in recent weeks, including:

  • Year 3 excursion to Emu Mountain to explore the natural and built feature of our local area
  • Year 4 Waste 2 Resources
  • Year 5 Coastal Discovery – helping to remove marine debris and litter from our dunes and beaches
  • Year 11/12 Legal Studies Supreme Court visit
  • Year 11/12 Aquatic Practices snorkelling excursion.

Futsal

Early this morning, Mr Wareing, the Sporting Academy football coaching staff and students travelled to Mt Warren Sporting Centre & Cornubia Sports Centre to compete in the Australasian Champion of Champions Futsal competition. The College eagerly awaits results over the weekend for our: U9s, U10s, U11s, U12’, Under 13s, U14s Girls and U15s teams.

College Growth

Finally, as some of you may be aware, I have held the position of Principal since 2018 and have been employed as a teacher at the College since 2005. During this period, I have had the pleasure to witness many students move up through the grades and achieve considerable academic accomplishment and personal growth and success.

In recent years, the College has experienced considerable growth and prosperity due to the collaborations and positive relationship between the College Board, the leadership and teaching team as well as the College educational community. I am extremely proud of the work and progress of all involved in the Peregian Beach College; however, I have made the difficult decision to step down from the position of Principal at the end of this academic year.

The 2023 academic year will see our student numbers at their highest in the College’s history, with a highly skilled teaching staff, professional Student Services Personnel and coaching staff to support and enhance each individual student to achieve their full academic, social, cultural, sporting and community potential. I look forward to being a continued part of the College’s development in 2023 in a teaching capacity.

I thank the College Board for the privilege of holding this important role of principal in recent years and for allowing me to move back to teaching in 2023, as my passion for the classroom remains strong.  I would also like to acknowledge all within our educational community for making my years as principal such a rewarding and enriching experience.

Library News

Hello Students and Families

I would like to thank everyone who attended this week and supported our 2nd Book Fair.  It was a whirlwind of a week with so much excitement and buzz of activity.  It bought me joy seeing the wide-eyed eagerness as our students browsed books, craft boxes, posters and stationery items.

A special thank you to those families who donated books from the Fair.  These have been inscribed and will be displayed next week.

Yours in reading,
Miss Tania

Year 3 – Mrs Golding

Student Teacher

Year 3G have enjoyed learning from Mr Williams the past two weeks. Mr Williams is currently studying a Bachelor of Education (Primary) at the University of the Sunshine Coast and is joining us for 4 weeks as a student teacher. Mr Williams has arranged some really fun activities so far including a game of Mathopoly and a ‘Runny Races’ experiment to test the viscosity of liquids. We’re looking forward to learning more from him over the next couple of weeks.

Maths Investigations

This week in Maths, students enjoyed completing two money investigations.

  • Big Spender: This investigation gave students the chance to spend $1000 on gifts for their family and friends. By using backtracking and closely monitoring their funds, students produced a list of carefully selected presents within their budget of $1000. Students were provided with brochures and catalogues to identify items they could buy and their price.
  • Summer Holiday: Students have been learning about the importance of budgeting. This investigation allowed students to apply what they have learnt in class to plan their dream holiday. Students started off with the big expenses such as flights and hotels.

Geography

Year 3 – Emu Mountain Excursion!

In Geography (HASS) this term, students have been learning about the natural and built features of a place. On Thursday, Year 3 classes went on an excursion to Emu Mountain, a significant place of the Sunshine Coast and just down the road from us here at PBC. Students had plenty of water and a healthy snack while on their journey. When students returned to school, they sketched what they saw while on top of the mountain and listed the natural and built features surrounding Emu Mountain.

Students definitely enjoyed this fun experience!

Sporting Achievements

Queensland School Sport Track & Field

WOW! An extraordinary second place for PBC school captain Kyan Bryant at the recent Queensland School Sport 13-19 years Track & Field meet. Kyan gained success in the 19-year boys’ long jump. Kyan also competed in the high jump and javelin across the weekend.

Thank you for being a great representative of PBC Kyan.

Tennis

Why was the tennis court so loud? Because all the players raised a racquet.
You would have heard a racket if you got down to the Coolum Tennis Club on Wednesday. The PBC students pictured participated in the Sunshine Coast Red Ball Tennis Competition. The students thoroughly enjoyed their day, many of them playing their first ever tournament.
All students showed great sportsmanship on the day, representing PBC excellently.
