Inclusive environments for all learners

At PBC, we are fortunate to have our classrooms filled with students who bring with them a range of special skills, gifts, abilities and learning styles. As a college, we lean on the expertise of our Learning Enrichment Coordinator, Janine Olsen, our amazing teachers and teacher aides, and in many cases, external support agency professionals, to ensure reasonable adjustments are made to ensure we are supporting  our students.

Our inclusive spaces and seating plans are designed to consider students who may need social, physical, behavioural and different learning needs. The intention is clear, create an environment where our students feel welcomed, safe and comfortable so they can access the curriculum and do the best they can.

Whilst some of these adjustments are physical resources, including sharing tables, adjustable or different height desks, wobble chairs, access to technology or sensory equipment, the college also looks to implement a range of behaviours and expectations to support all learners. Teachers use inclusive language, give clear directions, promote fairness, respect, trust and empathy to build and maintain an inclusive environment.

Our wonderful teachers use student driven data, collaboration and professional development opportunities to produce educational programs which cater for a range of learners. Often, tasks are presented in a variety of ways that enables the student to respond in a multimodal format, allowing each child to demonstrate their conceptual understandings that best suits their strengths. The sharing of ideas and multimodal presentations will often highlight an alternative method or thought that may not have been considered in formative lessons, enriching the overall learning.

Our RISE values, which guide all we do at PBC, are always at front of mind as we strive to succeed in our mission to enable each of our students to realise their full academic, social, cultural, sporting and community potential. Having an inclusive environment is one of the key components to our success.

Thank You!

Over the past week, we have had some wonderful opportunities for our students to come together. As has now become customary, Miss Tania did an amazing job organising what could only be described as the best book week celebration we’ve ever seen at PBC. Along with her behind the scenes lacky, she spent countless hours over the past few weeks transforming the library into a treasure trove of magical experiences for our students. Colleagues Miss Brooke and Mr. Wright we’re also integral to this year’s celebration success. Miss Brooke’s caring, calm and warm disposition made it easy for her to slip into the fictitious role of a fortune teller during junior library lessons, whilst the animated, enthusiastic and comical Mr. Wright gave a marvellous performance that will be remembered by students for years to come.

A big thank you must also go to the parents who no doubt spent hours sewing, sticking, painting, crimping and sourcing outfits for their child. I’m sure those that were fortunate enough to attend the parade, could see from the children’s smiling faces, just how much the effort was worth it.

Finally, a big thank you must go to our hard-working PIPS volunteers and admin team for organising our Father’s Day stall. Our littlies were super excited to go and find that special gift for their dad. For our Prep and Year 1 students, the day was topped off with a fun-filled afternoon treating their dads to some delicious afternoon tea, a game of soccer or play on the adventure playground, before heading home with handmade tie and crown in tow. Does it get any better? Thank you to Miss Preston, Mrs. Adler, Miss Angela and Mrs. Freedman for providing an opportunity for our families to come together.

Year 12: The Final Chapter of Their Learning Journey

As Term 3 progresses, our Year 12 students are approaching a significant milestone—the culmination of their school years and the beginning of their final preparations for external exams. This period marks the end of their learning journey at Peregian Beach College, a time filled with both anticipation and reflection.

Over the coming weeks, our students will be focusing intensely on their studies, refining their knowledge, and honing the skills they’ve developed throughout their schooling. Teachers and staff are providing tailored support to ensure each student is well-prepared for the challenges ahead, offering guidance and resources to help them succeed in their exams and beyond.

Simultaneously, we are actively planning for the future as we prepare to welcome a new cohort of Year 12s into their final year in 2025. This process includes reviewing and updating our curriculum, strengthening support systems, and ensuring we continue to provide an environment that nurtures both academic achievement and personal growth.

Looking Ahead: Staff Professional Development Day

While we focus on preparing our Year 12 students for their final exams, we are also planning for the next academic year. On Friday, 30th August, our staff will participate in a Professional Development Day dedicated to enhancing the educational experience for all year groups. The day will involve finalising Term 4 unit and lesson plans, as well as developing comprehensive unit plans for 2025. We will also be creating class lists that best meet the needs of our learners, alongside discussions about classroom arrangements to optimise learning environments.

For our primary students, we will identify those who may benefit from extension opportunities and plan activities accordingly. Preparations for the upcoming Year 2-4 camp will be finalised to ensure it offers a memorable and educational experience. Additionally, we will begin brainstorming and scheduling excursions and incursions that will enrich our students’ learning in 2025.

This day of collaboration and strategic planning is essential in ensuring that we continue to deliver a high-quality education across all year levels. We are committed to preparing our students for success, both in the immediate term and as they progress through their academic journey.

Library News

Hello Emu Readers

Our Book Week Parade last Friday was indeed magical.  Not only did Magician Wright host again this year, but he also performed marvelous magic tricks to a crowd of students who watched in wonder and in laughter.  He mastered the trick that involved conjuring a rabbit, and it didn’t matter to the audience that the magic bunny was a little grumpy!  Perhaps the bunny had been waiting to be summoned for longer than recommended and the woolly costume was getting very hot!

Best Book Week ever?  I think it may have been!

Costumes were artistic, inspirational and creative.   Marlo, Zachary and Luella were awarded prizes that included certificates, tuck-shop vouchers, books and chocolates.  Thank you for QBD for sponsoring our Book Parade this year with a pile of novels and picture books to giveaway.

The artworks depicting the 12 short-listed books were on display in the library and will be until the end of the term.  Every piece of art is colourful, brilliant and inspiring.  Mediums used were ink and objects (Bowerbird Blues), lanterns (Every Night at Midnight), ink and crayon (Can You Teach a Fish to Climb a Tree), string and paint (Gymnastica Fantastica), oil pastel and watercolour (Timeless [the CBCA winner]), and origami and clay (The Concrete Garden).  Ava (Year 4) won the best art representation award for her beautiful bowerbird nest.

Thank you students, and parents, for making my favourite week of the year so magical.

Yours in reading every day,

Miss Tania

Year 6 Camp

Japanese Interschool Speech Contest

On Sunday, August 25th, eight students from our college competed in the Sunshine Coast Interschools Speech Contest at Sunshine Coast University.

This is the first time students from Peregian Beach College have participated in this very prestigious competition, involving all languages and schools from the Sunshine Coast.

Our students did an outstanding job, having prepared for many weeks leading up to the event.

A huge congratulations to Bodhi W for earning 4th place, and Noah B and Mya A for securing 3rd place.

A shout-out to Maya L, Jaycie M, Elon T, Morgan S, and Mia C for their brilliant performances as well.

The competition was tough, and I am incredibly proud of all our participants. I’m excited to see what they will accomplish next year!  Well done!

Hello everyone! Next term we are holding our PBC fate and the art department will be working with each class of primary students to create, what are set to be, some stunning pieces of art to sell at our fate auction. We are looking for donations so that we can reduce our costs as much as possible.

Perhaps you have one of the following items laying around the house, wondering if you will ever use it… if so, we can help your trash to become our treasure.

  • Large canvases that can be repurposed – for large scale, group artworks (square or rectangular – it doesn’t matter if it’s in an existing frame and/or is already painted).
  • One Large sheet of MDF – 1cm thick ‘ish’ – anything around 1 meter squared.
  • Large photo frames x 2 – the bigger the better. If you have something you are not using anymore or considering throwing away, I am sure we can probably make the size work for our collaborative artworks!

Please email me as soon as you are able to, with any questions or possible items that you think would be appropriate. a.carpenter@pbc.qld.edu.au

Thank you so much in advance.

Ms Carpenter 😀

Congratulations to Morgan S. on finishing first at the Sunshine Coast Regional Track & Field Carnival in Shot Put. Morgan will now represent the Sunshine Coast at the upcoming State Track & Field Trials. PBC wishes you the best of luck Morgan!

Primary School Netball Team at Lightening Cup

Last Friday, the Peregian Beach College Primary School netball team showcased their skills and sportsmanship at the Lightning Cup. The team set clear goals for themselves, emphasizing the importance of having fun while also being competitive. They defined competitiveness as executing their roles effectively on the court, demonstrating discipline in both individual responsibilities and teamwork by focusing on doing the little things right. This crackerjack little team performed admirably, finishing second in their pool, which allowed them to advance to the final two games of the tournament. Throughout a long and hot day, it was their teamwork and grit that truly impressed Coach Nat. The dedication and spirit displayed by each player not only contributed to their success but also fostered a positive atmosphere among teammates. As they reflect on their performance, both the team and Coach Nat are eagerly looking forward to their next competition—the Primary Schools Cup in Bundaberg scheduled for September.
