Principal’s Report

SHANE DUPUY

Got a minute?

Parents have a crucial role in the education, social and emotional development of their children. At Peregian Beach College, we have an enthusiastic and committed body of parents who are involved in many aspects of college life. As a result, we maintain a high standard of education and our students learn in a safe and nurturing environment.

This first paragraph from our Parent Code of Conduct, identifies how important it is for parents and PBC staff to work together to achieve holistic success for our students. We celebrate the positive relationships we establish and look forward to years of sustained connectedness, honesty and respect.

Whilst we value the open lines of communication, it is also important to point out that if there is a need to have more formal conversations with your child’s teacher, Year Advisor, Coordinator or Guidance Officer, you respect their preparation time before, during and after school and make appointments at a mutually convenient time. Where possible, please contact the staff member you wish to chat with in advance, by phone or email, rather than catching them without notice. That way, the staff member can give you the time required to listen to your concerns.

Considering the aforementioned, over the past few weeks, I have had the opportunity to chat with several families regarding their child’s education. Although in some instances there has been some hard conversations, the level of mutual respect, acceptance of responsibility and the recognition of different perspectives, have allowed for positive outcomes for all. It has been very much appreciated.

College staff go to great lengths to inform families of events and learning opportunities that occur both in and out of the classroom. This regular interaction, whether it be via weekly class updates, individual or whole school emails, social media postings, information evenings or articles in the Emu Chronicle, is our commitment to ensure families are fully informed. Awards ceremonies, Christmas musicals, pool parties, discos, bake sales, Aqua Fun Park and classroom celebrations are just some of the events taking place in the coming weeks. When you add these events to the regular tuition and reporting demands, it’s not hard to see why teachers have little time to scratch themselves.

Please let us know.

It has been my experience that Term 4 is always one of transition. There are families who notify us of their departure from the PBC family, and there are others seeking to join our welcoming community. As the Principal, it can be a tricky period. Currently, leadership are forming classes and allocating staff for 2025 based on current student numbers. We go by the facts; what we have been advised by families via written correspondence. Thank you to those families who have adhered to the enrolment agreement by giving the College 10 weeks’ notice regarding their intended departure. We have enjoyed having you as part of our community and wish you the very best in your new setting. If you are considering a change, please chat with your child’s teacher or contact the office as soon as possible.

Year 12 Graduates:

As of this week, our Year 12 students have completed their final exams, wrapping up years of hard work and dedication. Over the past few weeks, these resilient leaders of the student body have shown remarkable focus, revisiting years of learning to demonstrate all they’ve accomplished. Watching them finish, relaxed and smiling, fills us with immense pride and confidence that they gave it their all.

Tonight, they’ll celebrate in style at their Year 12 formal at the beautiful Bli Bli Hotel—a well-deserved night to recognise their journey, friendships, and the closing of this chapter. With graduation behind them, tonight is all about savouring the moment, making memories, and stepping forward into the bright futures that await. Congratulations, seniors!

Staff Shout-Out:

A huge shout-out to Hayley C. and Jacqui V., who recently connected online with Alice, one of the founders and authors of the Grow Your Mind program. During their meeting, they shared the progress and impact of GYM here at PBC, leaving a remarkable impression. Alice was thoroughly impressed with the way our team is bringing the program to life, and both she and Kristina, the other GYM founder, reached out afterward to commend their work. Alice even requested permission to use our PBC documents as examples for other schools on the GYM platform, describing them as “brilliant.”

With hundreds of schools in the GYM program, this positive feedback reflects the exceptional efforts of Hayley and Jacqui and is a wonderful testament to the inspiring work being done here at PBC. Congratulations to them both on this recognition of their dedication and innovation!

EXPERIENCE UNI SC DAY

On Thursday 31 October, Ms Nikki Willers and I had the pleasure of travelling to UniSC for the annual Year 10 Experience UniSC Day. Students were invited to come along and be a Uni student for a day. Experience UniSC is a dedicated event for Year 10 students who are starting to prepare for life after high school. Students explore possible careers through participating in a variety of workshops or study areas of interest. Students were enrolled into some interactive workshops across the various industry occupations – Science, Technology and Engineering; Business, Entrepreneurship, Health, Education and Creative Industries. They participated enthusiastically in the workshops and were well-behaved ambassadors for the College – well done to all!

THE FRENCH

As one of our last workshops for the year in Career and Pathways Mind and Movement time, we have a special workshop for our Year 11 non-Academy students. The workshop, titled “Wellbeing Starts from Within”, This workshop comes at an important time, with students preparing for their first set of Year 12 exams scheduled for soon after. As students approach these assessments, maintaining a balance between study and self-care becomes essential for managing stress effectively. This workshop will encourage students to take time for wellbeing and relaxation, helping them to stay focused and refreshed. This engaging session will be facilitated by Bronwyn Whitaker, Engagement Specialist from The French, a renowned wellbeing and skincare educator. During the workshop, students will explore the importance of holistic wellbeing, with discussions on skin health, nutrition, and self-care. They will also participate in a hands-on activity, creating and applying an all-natural face mask using avocado, banana, and honey.

In addition to the practical elements, Bronwyn will share insights into The French’s health, nutrition and skincare courses, providing valuable information for students interested in these fields. Students will also explore:

  • The relationship between nutrition, skin health, and wellbeing
  • Practical self-care techniques
  • Relaxation strategies to promote mental and physical health during stressful times

The workshop will also introduce students to potential career pathways in beauty and skincare, with insights into The French’s educational courses in these fields. This interactive session offers a chance to unwind while learning skills that can enhance their sense of wellbeing, providing them with a positive and productive break from academic pressures.

Noose House of Dance – Hollywood 2024

Congratulations to Ruby J, Ebony G, Sophie G, and Ryleigh F, for their exceptional dedication and remarkable performances at the Noosa House of Dance’s Hollywood 2024 concert! As long-serving members, each student showcased both skill and passion, capturing the Hollywood spirit, brilliantly. I must make special mention of the Pink Panther performance, which had Mrs. Dalgliesh in stitches – the costumes, comedic timing and attitude of the girls during this performance were simply perfect! Other dances such as the hip-hop routines and the “boys” routine, were full of energy, leaving a memorable impression, and Ebony’s red glittery dress was truly show-stopping. We, along with Ms. Fernandes, Ms. Lovegrove, and Mrs. Dalgliesh, are incredibly proud of each of you. We would also like to acknowledge the tremendous efforts of Ebony G, who was offered a scholarship to the Noosa House of Dance next year – well deserved, Ebony G!

‘Side by Side’ Project

Art Extension Program: “Side by Side” Launches to Celebrate Student Creativity.

Mrs Olsen, Miss C & Ms Mac

PBC is excited to announce the launch of a new pilot program at our school, “Side by Side,” an art extension initiative designed to nurture and celebrate the artistic talents of our students. This innovative program is a collaborative effort between our dedicated Visual Art teachers and the Inclusion team, reflecting our commitment to fostering creativity and inclusivity within our school community.

The “Side by Side” program aims to encourage and develop the artistic skills of selected students, providing them with unique opportunities to explore their creativity in a supportive and inclusive environment.

Throughout the program, students will engage in a variety of artistic activities. They will have the chance to experiment with different techniques and materials, broadening their artistic horizons and discovering new ways to express themselves.

A key component of “Side by Side” is the celebration of each student’s individual journey and achievements. Program participants will have the opportunity to exhibit their artwork to the broader College community: a testament to the power of collaboration and inclusion in the arts.

Every student has a unique voice and perspective, and through “Side by Side,” we are excited to provide a platform for these strong voices to be heard and celebrated. By encouraging creativity and supporting artistic growth, we aim to inspire our students to pursue their passions and develop a lifelong appreciation for the arts.

For more information about the “Side by Side” program, please contact Mrs Olsen in our Inclusion team.

Year 5 Students Participate in Respectful Relationships Workshop with Guidance Officer Jacqui Vos

This past week, our Year 5 students took part in an inspiring and interactive workshop led by our school guidance officer, Mrs. Jacqui Vos, on the topic of respectful relationships. The workshop was an engaging opportunity for students to explore what respect truly means in both words and actions, along with how to foster positive relationships with their peers.

Mrs. Vos introduced the concept of respect as “thinking and acting in a positive way to show others that you care about their feelings and well-being.” Students learned that respect isn’t just about politeness; it’s about understanding and valuing each other’s unique qualities. Through group activities and discussions, they practiced finding similarities with others, focusing on people’s strengths, and understanding that conflicts are a natural part of relationships. Mrs. Vos emphasised that the key to handling conflicts is learning effective communication skills to work through disagreements calmly and constructively.

Our Year 5 students walked away with valuable skills that they can carry with them through school and beyond. They learned that respect is something we show not just through words, but also through our actions and attitudes. We’re proud of our students for embracing these lessons and showing a genuine interest in creating a positive, supportive community for each other.

LIBRARY NEWS

Dear Emu Readers

I would like to thank our wonderful students, families and staff that helped make our Scholastic Book Fair a success this week.   Thank you for supporting the growth of our library.

It was wonderful to see the hype around the books and reading that the fair created, there were many books to choose from which made wish list decisions challenging at times!

We sold 384 books! The reward dollars from Scholastic will buy new books for our college library.

There were two Fair competitions running this week.  Those students that purchased a book from the fair were eligible to enter both. The winners will be notified next week

During library lessons this week I managed to take some snaps of some of our primary classes browsing the shelves, writing serious wish lists and visualizing our book tally goal chart, enjoy the gallery below:

Japan Week

Japan Week 2024 29th – 30th October

This year’s Japan Day celebrations were a resounding success, featuring two days of dynamic taiko drumming workshops and thrilling performances by the talented Byron Taiko Group. Students in Years 5-7 participated in these drumming workshops, which fostered teamwork, cultural appreciation, and skill development.

On Wednesday, each Year 8 student class put in impressive effort to create a five-minute performance for Years 3-7, showcasing their ability to work together and keep time—a real highlight to watch!

We also had the pleasure of welcoming Nobuko Noack, who generously volunteered her time to introduce origami and Japanese games to our Years 2-3 students, making the experience fun and memorable.

Japan Day aims to foster cultural awareness and understanding among our students. It offers them a meaningful, real-world experience of the language and culture they are studying. In a world where conflicts persist, we must inspire our young people to cultivate deeper understanding and empathy for others.

Japan Day continues to grow each year, and we’re already looking forward to an even bigger celebration in 2025!

Year 7 & 8 Striving for Excellence!

As we continue through the final term of the year, it’s exciting to see the energy and enthusiasm building within our school community! One of the highlights of Term 4 is the much-anticipated swimming carnival on Wednesday, 20th November. This event is not only a chance to show your competitive spirit but also a wonderful opportunity to get involved, have fun, and demonstrate your school pride. Whether you’re competing in the pool, cheering from the sidelines, or helping behind the scenes, remember that this is an occasion to embody our core values, particularly inclusivity. Everyone has a part to play, so let’s make it a day of encouragement and team spirit!

With so much happening as we head into the last stretch of 2024, it’s important to remember that even though the end of the year is approaching, our focus on maintaining high standards for both behaviour and academics remains unchanged. While the festivities are a great way to close out the year, it’s crucial to remember that excellence in our academics should remain at the forefront. For many students, exams are coming up, and this is the time to dig deep, focus on revision, and give your best effort. Reflective practice is key at this stage. Take time to assess your strengths and areas for improvement and use the remainder of the term to refine your skills. Use your study time wisely, stay organised, and don’t hesitate to reach out for help if needed. Every bit of effort you put in now will help you finish the year strong.

Although we’re nearing the end of the school year, our expectations around behaviour remain the same. As always, we strive to create a respectful and supportive learning environment where everyone is valued and treated with dignity. This term let’s continue to demonstrate respect for our teachers, peers, and our school. Service of others is something that’s always important, but especially in these final weeks, let’s look out for one another and be the best version of ourselves. Treat each day as an opportunity to show kindness and responsibility. Finish strong, Peregian Beach College—your hard work and positive attitude will make all the difference!

Wishing you all a fantastic end to the year,

Samantha Ryan
