Self-Improving Schools Committee
The first Self-Improving Schools Committee (Teniele Adler, Heath Cahalan, Haylee Freudigman & Alita Carpenter) met with Independent Schools Queensland representative Randall Burow on Thursday 18th March.
The Peregian Pedagogies Framework, which is ingrained within the teaching practices of our established teachers, was revisited and revised to maintain and advance our high standards.
The Peregian Pedagogies are very much a distinguishing feature of the College and play a major role in achieving the educational outcomes that we take pride in.
Aspects of coaching, mentoring, modelling, provision of regular feedback, in depth data analysis, observation, and collaboration will be targeted for our staff professional development timetable.
All members of the teaching team must align to professional goals, which are based on student need and strategic vision.
All teachers will be sharing their implementation of the Peregian Pedagogies throughout Term 2 editions of the Emu Chronicle.

Gardening ELO
JENNY DU TOIT AND JEANETTE TOLOMEO
With the end of term just around the corner, we made the decision to brave the rainy weather yesterday and get our Bush Tucker Garden planted before the holidays!
Our 21 gardening ELO students did an amazing job, despite the soggy conditions. They loved getting wet and dirty while working in the rain.
I heard so many comments like “This is great!” and “I had the best time!” and not a single complaint from this hard-working bunch!
It will take a while for the garden to become established, but I’m sure in time it will look lovely and be a useful addition to our school grounds – both as a resource for Food Technology and for teaching students about Aboriginal bush tucker foods.
Many thanks to everyone who lent a hand and especially to the Beutel family for their generous donations to gardening at PBC.
Tennis, Craft, Yoga & Guided Drawing ELOs
Here are a few more snaps of students enjoying their ELO time.
Our Enhanced Learning Opportunities (ELOs) provide students with the chance to participate in extra-curricular activities outside of their normal classroom environment.
Each activity is overseen by a member of our staff who has an interest in that particular area. Students are able to choose their top three activities and are then allocated to one of the groups. The ELOs change each Semester. The program runs every second Wednesday afternoon. This program includes all students from Prep – Year 12

St Patrick’s Day
On Wednesday Year 1 proudly celebrated Irish Day.
Saint Patrick’s Day is celebrated on the 17th of March every year. People celebrate Saint Patrick’s Day with parades, feasts and Irish music. Another common tradition is to dress up in green as green is the national colour of Ireland.
Year 1 listened to the stories Saint Patricks Day and How to catch a Leprechaun, decorated shamrocks, made flags, used interesting adjectives to describe Leprechauns, wrote how to catch a cheeky Leprechaun and had lots of fun discussing what we would do if we found a pot of gold at the end of a rainbow.
And of course, no celebration is complete without a photo shoot!

Year 6 Science
In Science this term, the Year 6 students are investigating reversible and irreversible changes with various materials and how we make use of this knowledge in our everyday lives.
We also investigated the variances in melting and freezing points with different substances eg water froze a lot quicker then olive oil. To our surprise, chocolate melted much faster than wax
Pikelets would not be as good if we didn’t add heat, which changed the state of the batter from a liquid to a solid.
Mmmm…. they were delicious and they stayed in their solid state when we waited for them to cool down, before enjoying them. This change in state was irreversible.
We also made use of the knowledge that the changes of state when working with wax, could be used to our advantage. We had great fun with this reversible change and made wax wraps. The solid wax melted and then solidified again on the fabric creating something which we now use to wrap up our sandwiches instead of using plastic.
Much better for the environment!
Discovering how we could make our own crystals was exciting.
After choosing suitable copper sulphate seed crystals, we saturated our solvent (water) with copper sulphate, placed the seed crystals, which we had tied onto a piece of cotton, into the solution and watched them get bigger over a couple of days.
We had to be sure to re-saturate the solution each day to ‘feed‘ the crystal so that it continued to grow.
It was suggested by a student that we should try and create our own diamonds this way….if only.
Take note of the shape of the crystal which is particular to copper sulphate.
